I'm from south America, and I've recently started to get into the beer world. We don't get many interesting beers here, and a friend is travelling to the us soon and he told me he'd bring me a beer but I have to choose one. So, if you could have one beer available in the us, which one would it be? I'm thinking trappistes rochefort 10 or heady topper. Thanks!

It all depends where in the US your friend is traveling to.

Given that one of the beers you named is not an American beer, but a Belgian beer, should we assume you have access to almost no non-Paraguayan beers at all? I mean Rochefort 10 is a beautiful beer well worth trying if you've never had it. On the other hand, it is available in many places other than the US, so you might want to focus more on beers you can only get in the US. If you have access to no American beer at all, I'd almost think of suggesting something like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. It would be hard to pick another single beer as representative of American beer in general, I think.

That depends tremendously on your preferences--hoppy? stout? barrel-aged? sour? Belgian? something unusual and creative? What does your friend have access to (where is he from)?

Heady or Pliny are some of the most popular fresh hoppy beers and would certainly be delicious. I also love BCBS (but push for one of the variants--bramble, coffee, cherry, proprietors) and think it is one of the better barrel-aged beers around.

If he's in Chicago, you might think of asking him to bring one of the more off-the-wall Pipeworks beers too. Those guys are getting pretty creative with the beers they brew.

Yeah, as an answer to Traquairlover, we do have access to some beers that are not from Paraguay, but the selection is really small, it's mostly just popular beer like fuller's beers, paulaner, etc. We have no IPAs or Belgian trappist beers and these seem to be very popular. I like bitter beers but not overly bitter. I tried flying monkey's smashbomb atomic ipa and that's pretty much my limit on bitterness. I would also be interested in a creative one like the chocolate beers, but it's gonna be hot for a long time when my friend comes back, so it should be one that can either be drunk on hot weather or age well for at least a year
