Ha! Don't worry, it'll be just fine. For a Tripel it's a bit hoppy, but overall it's not that bad for a budget version of that style.

Budget $11.99 sixer? I don't Tripel often but when I do I prefer Unibroue. I know it runs a little high for a 4 pack, but for how rarely I buy Tripels I'll take the hit.

EDIT: And for sake of the original thread: Duclaw Sweet Baby Jesus.

It's all relative. Around here the Unibroue 4 packs and Golden Monkey 6 packs are the same price- so that's 1/3rd less. Westmalle is way more than that. I think that's pretty fair to think of it as a budget Tripel.

This, although I've never had any of their other beers because I'm not sure it's worth it. Same goes for Van Steenberge, I actually wanted to try the Gulden Draak but I really disliked the Piraat, it tasted odd and very alcoholic - a far cry from most of the other belgians I've tried.

What was "awful" about it? It isn't a beer I drink very often, but it was a solid tripel. Certainly nothing offensive.

Jester King Commercial Suicide. I'd heard great things, but I tried that one, and it was sawdust and sourness. Unfortunately, nothing we get this far north inspires me, and the really good stuff they make is local distro only. I've been pretty well put off since.

It's got to be really, REALLY bad to be a forever spoiler. Breweries change, brewers come and go, and eventually it can't hurt to give 'em another shot.

Ironically, last night I was at my local liquor store and a woman was buying a Golden Monkey as part of her mixed six pack. I told her that if she likes Golden Monkey then she has to try a Long Strange Tripel, handed her one and she bought it along with the Golden Monkey. So that was my "drink good beer" deed of the day.

In my craft infancy, first time I was in a SoCal bar on vacation saw Blind Pig, saw it was highly rated and ordered it. Bartender mistakenly pulled a pour from a PTE tap (I didnt really know about this beer at the time) and I drank that. Loved it, clarified it was PTE and then tried the Blind PIg which I didnt like. If bartender had given me the correct beer the first time I am sure I would not have tried the PTE.

Also, on that same vacation got a bottle of Duet which tasted very metallic. Would have never ordered another Alpine beer again but luckily enough in a trade I got a PureHop as an extra which thankfully led me to Nelson.

Got a skunky beer from Stone that caused me to lay off their stuff for a few days.

DuClaw in general, but since then they've been growing on me, especially because I can find their stuff super fresh.

I really didn't care for Golden Monkey, it was too sweet and for me it didn't really represent the style well. Fortunately I had already had Hop Devil, DirtWolf, and Headwaters, all great beers so I knew they were a solid brewery. Didn't care for Hop Ranch all that much, either.

Agree. There are a few breweries down on the south side of metro Denver that I haven't been back too yet since my first experience was poor. Just finally got back around to one for the 3rd time and it had gone from bad to unexceptional.

Upon further thought. Tried Ruination several years ago. It was nothing but bitter, but it didn't ruin me on Stone. Tried Ruination again recently...it was still disgustingly bitter, and it's actually kinda turned me off from Stone now. Considering I am a complete and utter hophead, this one's particularly disappointing to me.

I can't say there's been a single beer that kept me from a brewery, but there have been some that have lowered my expectations.

This thread just makes me want a Dirt Wolf real bad. Had a freshly tapped keg a while back and almost messed my pants. Victory brews some awesome beers, don't let Golden Monkey kill it for you.

That is certainly the truth. The good stuff is definitely worth seeking out, despite the increasing glut of stuff on the shelves nowadays from brewers that probably should have just stuck to homebrewing.
As a very wise man once said, "...just because you love something does necessarily not mean you will excel at it."
