    Hey all,
My old man is taking a trip to Europe (going all over the place), and has asked me to give him 1 beer for him to bring back for me. Trying to figure out what I should say, and figured I would get everyone's input.

    Additionally,
I tend to like the belgian quad's, IPA's and high gravity beers with a lot of flavor, looking for something out of the norm a definite one time must try this beer.

If you value your old man's time there and don't want him to miss a bunch of possibly life-changing experiences trying to track down one 'out-of-the-norm' beer for you back home when he probably doesn't know where to look or what it looks like, tell him you'd rather that he just have one himself at a place that he's really enjoying the moment and shoot you a photo of it.
If he insists, tell him to get you a bottle of the best one that he has there and bring it back. Better yet, bring two and drink them together.

Geez, just made myself tear up...

JMW - I totally feel you - but this is a two way fold kind of thing 1. to help him in finding some good hard to find beer while he is out there. 2. so that he can bring some good beer back to share with me and my brother when he gets back. He has asked us to do some research and get him these so that he has some insite. I already tried the bring me back a good beer from wherever you are and you think I'll like method.

Well I suppose you'll have to define 'all over the place' for us then, if we're to help.

I know of Germany, France, UK, and Belgium but I don't know the entire itinerary.

    Cantillon Fou' Foune.

In all seriousness, a good bit of the beer he'll be able to drink there, we get imported here. Can you be more specific about where he'll be going? If Belgium, that means he should get Thijs (BA Brabander) to hook him up with some Westy 12, or pick up a 750ml bottle of Cantillon/3F for you from a beer store.

Ok, those are definitely 2 that I have been seeing a lot about on Google searches (especially the Cantillon)

In fact he should be able to find Westy 12 in stores esp in Brussels, albeit at a fairly significant markup (expect 15-20 bucks for a 12oz bottle).

Anything Cantillon. But try to talk him into one of each of what they have. Once he tries them he will most likely be wanting to bring more than one home anyway.

This is assuming that he has a tooth for Belgian beers, and not everybody does just because they're in demand here.
In the UK, look for Meantime, Kernel and Thornbridge in bottles. Black Sheep Progress is a one-off that might fit your criteria. Most other very popular beers can be gotten here one way or another. Other than that, drink cask.

Agreed. If he's in Brussels, I guarantee you that he doesn't have to go out of his way to get some Westy 12. Beer Temple just 1 block north of the Grand Place (the major tourist attraction in the city center) will carry them but its like 15 euros a bottle. Its probably still worth it in this situation because of the convenience and the try-it-once concept.

If you want more and a better price, Thijs can hook you up (previously mentioned him). He's an awesome BA who hooked me up with some when I was in Brussels last month- that way I could basically proceed to enjoy my vacation instead of chasing beer down.

France is a wasteland and most German and Belgian beers are available in the States. Except Westerleven.

Andechs is coming to the states soon, and the doppelbock is top notch, but if he can find Westy, that's your best bet.

If he is like the rest of us he will not have packing material in his suitcases for when he travels, nor will it occur to him to also pack a foldable duffel as an extra suitcase that stash his clothes should he need the harder luggage for bringing back beer. If he wants to drink while there, he is bound to encounter some bottles for sale. Whether they are good beers or not, he could just grab something easily.

He most likely will buy lots of souvenirs so the duffel is a good idea if he is buying beer or not.

S&H Imports will be the importing partner, no idea what they will be sending. I will post in the German forum when I have more info.
