I would have to say that (as a non-American) the beer that epitomises 'Merica for me is Sierra Nevada Torpedo - when I think America my brain automatically goes to IPA and Torpedo has that classic US IPA kick to it - 2 cents right there!

    Another SN favorite:
    Hoptimum

mostly because I'm drinking one right now and it's still effing awesome

but also because it's more representative of the strong/bold beers that we're known for

but, yeah, can't front, it should be SNPA.

    As a non-American, I concur.

Going to have some tomorrow. Classic.

SNPA. No doubt. Hop that launched American craft brewing. Beer that helped apa's and ipas become Americas favorite style.

Besides Straub (noted above post #22 by drtth) there's also August Schell in New Ulm, MN - "since 1860".

Bud. Regardless of who owns AB now it's the beer that most people think of the world over when they think of American beer.

I was going to make a similar point. 'merica and Muricah! or all the other cheeky Comedy Central style spellings do nothing more than perpetuate the feeling that rednecks, hicks and well, white trash in general have claimed dominion over national pride. It just devalues the appreciation for what this nation actually represents on a grand scale. Yes, there's rampant poverty juxtaposed against embarrassing wealth; unsettled racism, sexism, homophobia and just ignorant hate in general, and a political system that is best served by having all "normal" folk take sides instead of work together towards a truly strong nation, BUT - we still have the best chance at individual prosperity and most of all , freedom to do things like make a living in order to buy great beer! Sorry for the rant, but I needed to get that out.

Oh yes, to the original question - I agree that as a "poster child" for an American beer, Bud takes it hands down. As a poster child for American craft, I'll have to lean towards Sam Adams Boston Lager.

Pliny the Elder - great DIPA (pretty "American" style) with a great reputation that's been around for a while.

I agree, Samuel Adam's Boston Lager. Although I do think Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a great choice too.

Except it's not really "how we do it in 'Murica" or "what's representative of American beer" or what's the most popular". The OP asked what would we enter into a contest for BEST IN THE WORLD. I understand your pick, but I'm not so sure a barrel-aged imperial stout would appeal to the rest of the world.

From being over in the Germany forum for example or from reading posts from those in the UK like @marquis, many applaud the simpler amber and pale ales/lagers, especially those that are of the highest quality/consistency from the larger brewers. For example, Boston Lager, Brooklyn Lager, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale...etc.

This isn't to say they wouldn't enjoy a Double Barrel Hunahpu, I just don't know that they would find that to be the "best beer in the world".
