We just booked a trip to Grand Tetons and Yellowstone, but we have one day to kill in SLC. My family of 4 consists of 2 young children, so I am looking for recommendations on what to do in general, but also kid-friendly restaurants with good beer selection would also be great! We are staying near Pioneer park and will not have a car.

Additionally, should I look at stocking up on some variety packs of beer before we drive North? We will be meeting another family of 4 and 2 more adults so I am thinking it'd be nice to know we have beer back at our apartments that is likely better and cheaper than at any restaurants. Where is a good place near that area to stock up?

We tend to stay away from hoppy beers, so I'd be looking for dark and malty, barrel aged, amber stuff. Thanks for any help!

In terms of family places, the brewpubs are your best option, as our best beer bars are all 21+

    • If you're staying by Pioneer Park, you'll be able to conveniently access Red Rock and Squatters. Last I was at Red Rock, they still had Furlong as well as Reve, two barrel-aged beers that are long sold out in bottles and only come once a year. (I suspect Furlong may be gone by now, but it never hurts to ask.) These will be your best bet without public transportation.

    • A little further out in different directions, there are the two Proper Brewing locations — Avenues Proper and Proper Burger (Try the Foreign Gentleman coffee stout if you like dark beer — it's an English stout at Avenues and a Belgian stout at Proper Brewing — sneak over while the -21s are at Proper Burger next door to try some more seasonals.)

    • Some local restaurants have decent beer selections, though not as extensive as the 21+ bars. Spitz has a decent tap list… hopefully some other users have some suggestions.

    • Wasatch has a brewpub in Sugarhouse that kids can go to. There's some overlap with Squatters, but also some different beers and seasonals. Nearby restaurants Mellow Mushroom and Flatbread pizza don't have horrible selections of local beer either.

    • You can buy beer at the brewpubs I mentioned, including high point stuff that you can't find in the super market. I don't think Red Rock sells at the store, but you can buy some stuff in the brewery that's a short drive north. You can also stop at the state liquor store. Epic is a short drive away on State Street. If you're renting a car on the way out of town, you could stop by 2 Row in Midvale for a few bottles for the road. Depending on how soon you're in town, Fisher Brewing a mile or so south of Pioneer Park might have some of its bottled stuff available (or you could grab a crowler or growler), but kids can't go in the bar.

Hope that helps, and if I'm missing anything I'm sure someone else will fill you in. If you want to sneak out for a pint when the kids are in bed, go to Beer Hive (closest), Beer Bar or the Bayou. Enjoy and cheers!

nsps - this sounds like a GREAT start! Thank you for your time!
We arrive in Late May, so I assume a lot of the barrel aged stuff you mentioned at Red Rock will be consumed :-(, but perhaps someone else nearby will be releasing some other BA stuff as I do enjoy those.

We arrive early one morning, and meet the rest of the family the following day, but I don't know what time yet. I do know we pickup our rental the second day at 0900, so there is a chance I can at least stock up then??

If you're lucky, you could be in town at the right time to get some Paardebloem from Red Rock! The bottles sell out instantly, but you can usually get some at the restaurant for a few weeks.

don't worry about that, there are a few bottle shops as you drive north towards yellowstone that have better selection than Utah and are significantly cheaper. If you're taking 15 north, stop in Pocatello at a place called Grapevine, its not far from the highway. If you pass through Jackson they have a few decent bottle shops in town, my fav is the one attached to the Jackson Hole Foods. Or stop at Melvin if you drive through Alpine.

All good news! Thanks fellas! I might try to pickup a few to get us started. I have yet to map out our trip, but I am not above a detour to a good bottle shop! Hey, if I'm the driver...

Marcellar's in Idaho Falls is also a good place to pick up beer en route.
