Having the privilege to live near 1 Industrial Way in Portland on the right coast, I'm hoping to post some side by side impressions of the beers available there now from Foundation, Austin Street and Battery Steel, and from some of the 1 Industrial Way alumni--Maine Beer Company, Rising Tide Brewing, Bissell Brothers, and probably others. Today it's Austin Street's new "Anniversary DIPA" and Foundation's Epiphany. Epiphany is the beer that got me hooked on fresh IPA the Wednesday afternoon before Thanksgiving, 2015. Bissell Brothers was closed, but Foundation was open. I bought my first growler of Epiphany (the same growler pictured). The taste opened my eyes--there really is enjoyable beer beyond a cold lager on a hot day. I've been going back ever since.
Since November 2015, Epiphany has lost its cloudiness, but the taste remains the same--balanced fruity heaven. No taste of the extra alcohol, but no bitterness either. It's my gold-standard for what a DIPA should be.
Austin Street has become my favorite brewery, however. "Rally" last summer sold me on lower ABV brews; I can't wait for this year's release, and Patina is now what a beer should be. Their doubles are very good; in my mind in the league with Dinner and Swish, so I'll never turn them away, but Epiphany is still my favorite double.

Great post -- 1 Industrial Way is a real Craft success story. I've been going for a couple of years now and recently have been enjoying Austin St Patina and their DIPA Neverender - those guys really stepping up their game. As for Foundation -- I got a 4 pack of E at the brewery two weeks ago and the beer (less than a week old) had lots of unappealing floaties. You can kind of see it in the photo below. Not sure if this can we decanted or not - I haven't tried yet - didn't seem to affect flavor. I'm assuming this kind of chunky haze is not what they are going for. Maybe a by product of the post BIssell scale up?

I've had a couple snow globe beers from Foundation in the past few visits. I visit Austin Street & Allagash when I go to Industrial Way. Last time I only stopped by Foundation to return 3 growlers and pick up a 4pk of E for a friend.

Unfortunately the floats are natural yeast sediment that comes from the end of the packaging run. If you took it out you would strip flavor from the beer, they do not add any off flavors and are perfectly safe. There was no "scale up" when Bissell moved, in fact the original 15 barrel brew system is still in use.

intersting...a few of us had a brief discussion about the evolution of epiphany in an austin street thread...we were discussing the disappearance of the haze in piphy(not that haze=flavor, but it's a visual indicator that something is different). The last few batches I've gotten have just not been the same. My wife and I usually drink straight from the can, so I only noticed the lack of haze when I had it on draft near our house in Boston.

I too thought they were experiencing some growing pains, but it's been a year now...maybe this is the way they want their beer to be? It's still a good beer, but it just seems to lack the punch and aroma of the old days.

I know that sean lawson said recently that sip of sunshine hasn't had as much tropical punch as it used to...that it's been more earthy. He said that it was due to the batch of hops he had gotten. I wonder if Foundation is experiencing the same thing?

    On topic:

Industrial way is such an amazing place. Anchored by one of the absolute best breweries in the country, it's so fun going there to try to the new kid on the block. Worst case scenario, the new brewery isn't great and you leave with Coolships. But has there been a stinker there yet? Doesn't seem like it. To me, Austin St. Patina is the best pale ale in Portland.

Could be yeast ....could be protein floaties. I also got a 4 of Venture IPA the same day and it had the exact same look..so me thinks it's probably not end of packaging yeast/hop sludge. I just poured another Venture and this is the look. It's not decantable btw; in suspension. Again -- the beer tastes good -- so I don't really care -- but no brewer is going for this look...at least not yet.

Hey guys, I'm heading up there tomorrow for the start of my mini vacation with my two kids. I heard E and Reciprocal are being released. Should I even try for those two beers or do you think the lines will be too crazy and I should just try to hit Austin St.? My kids are well behaved but I don't want to force them to wait an hour in line just so their pop can get a 4 pack. Are these lines nuts or are they usually only a 10-20 minute wait? Thanks in advance for any advise. Either way I'm excited to try some Portland brews again! Cheers!!

I would recommend hitting foundation for epiphany. The lines are typically much shorter than BB. Obviously with school vacation week lines will be a little longer but still won't be too bad. I think you are looking at 10-20 minutes max. Check the BB Twitter feed after that to see how they are doing and stop there if your kids are in a good mood.

"At least not yet" as Chipaway says. Heady Topper is similar with the floaties. Probaly why they ask you to drink from the can. Personally I don't mind 'em. Not so long ago cloudy brews were considered by some to be a sign of sub-par brewing. Soon there'll be broccoli & bacon bits floating in our beer. And we'll like it!

Foundation has been floaty city for me for about a year, I believe.

Last week I had my floaty-est beer yet:
