got a rental car for a day on the cheap and looking to get out of the city with the wife for a night.

vermont is a bit far of a drive for one night... any ideas on quiet, idyllic places with a nice brewery around?

Keegan Ales in Kingston. Or Peekskill. Or a little longer drive would be Ommegang.

Sounds like you're describing Ommegang in Cooperstown, NY.
    http://www.ommegang.com/#brewery_tours

Ommegang's website has a link to the Cooperstown Beverage Trail that looks like it could be fun. Of course if you know anything about baseball you know that the Baseball Hall of Fame is in Cooperstown. So, there's stuff to do there besides Ommegang.

(I could have sworn I heard Ommegang had a small hotel on the brewery grounds, but I didn't see anything about it on their website...)

Just throwing this out there as I haven't made it to either yet, but I think Kane and Carton in NJ are both in beach towns if I'm not mistaken and not too far from the city.

ETA: I also think they're within a half hour from each other as well.

If you want to stay a little closer to home, there are really nice scenic areas to drive through and some decent breweries near the NJ/PA border between Lehigh Valley and New Hope/Lambertville.

Triumph Brewery in New Hope, PA
    Riverhorse in Lambertville, NJ
Ship Inn brewpub in Milford, NJ
    Weyerbacher in Easton, PA

There are several easily accessible wineries around that area too.

Piggy-Backing on the previous post, Vault is near here, too, in Yardley, PA. See recent thread for opinions. Also, Riverhorse is not in Lambertville anymore, they're in Ewing, which isn't very far from Yardley.
Also near to New Hope is Bucks County Brewing (ehh, ok) and in the same building is Hewn Spirits if you like the distillery thing.
A couple of other places are not far from there, like Round Guys, but I don't know about these spots.

    Thanks for the suggestions!

I looked at Cooperstown but it's a bit of a drive for a 1-night trip, and being a huge baseball fan, I'd have to at least spend a whole day at the HOF.

I've been to Easton and the surrounding area (I'm a bit of a gambler too) but never made it to Weyerbacher. Love that there's a Chick-Fil-A on the way there lol

Never having had a chance to try a Kane brew, that might be the winner, with a drive over to Carton and maybe a stay somewhere nearby.

@taestee - If you end up going to Kane/Carton I'd like to hear your feedback/thoughts as I'm planning on making a similar trip in October. I've only had Boat from Carton but am looking forward to trying their coffee IPA SS2014 at Covenhoven over the weekend. Enjoy!

Hey Taestee. Carton is 30 minutes North of Kane. Kane is less than 10 minutes from the beach in case you need to sell your wife. Plus, you could find a beach-house/hotel for a decent price since its past season now.

Will report back. Will also see what I can bring back -- if anyone wants me to pick anything up for trade, let me know.

I would go to Carton First, then head to Kane. After Kane you can go to Brickwall in Asbury Park (or one of a bunch of other spots around, I just like Brickwall). If you need a cab back to where you're staying after all that, Surf Taxi.

I second Brickwall. Good food and tap list.

Surprised no one has said Tired Hands, or a trip to Philly in general. Could hit up TH + Monks and a few places there, ~2 hour drive.

Kane has great beer (and if you're going to visit there I'd stop by Carton as well), though no food. Tired Hands has more of a real brewpub feel vs. picnic tables in a warehouse.

Its a beer web site laden with beer geeks, what did you expect !

Its all in the positioning, its a beautiful drive up there through the country, amazing water and mountain view too. What woman wouldn't want a trip like that? And they happen to have some beer there too!

My wife and I were trying to come up with something similar for our 5th anniversary, and first night of leaving our infant with the grandparents overnight. Initially we had wanted to go to Vermont or Ommegang but she felt those were too far to be away.

Once we started thinking about it we realized how much we take for granted the ability to just get on the subway or take a cheap cab wherever. Everything we looked into we'd have to drive to, and there didn't really seem anywhere that had a good pocket of places clustered together, then it turns into a designated driver situation, which defeats the purpose.

That SS 2014 is the best coffee IPA I've tasted. Hands down.
