Some folks just focus on the positives.
I've got a car you might want to buy from me. It's in decent shape, and there's a 4-pack of Heady in the trunk.

I'm sure Kane has good beer, but I don't know who would call Asbury Park, NJ "idyllic" [besides "The Boss"]. Non beer-geeks go to Asbury Park for concerts or to get drugs.

If the wife doesn't go Asbury Park (and I wouldn't blame her...neither would I) take another look at exploring along the Delaware River between New Hope and Easton. Either Route 29 in NJ or Route 32/611 in PA are gorgeous drives along the Delaware River, along which there at least 5 different breweries/brewpubs, at least 2 wineries, lots of great restaurants, shopping, farm stands, apple picking, public parks, hiking/walking trails, bed & breakfasts, etc.

Amtrak's Acela train will take you from NYC to Philly in an hour.

i considered Philly (if anything to try to get Russian River on draft), but i dont think any part of driving down there or being in another big city will be "relaxing" although really the goal is to get out of ny.

Cold Spring is a quaint little town, right on the Hudson and about 20 min. north of Peekskill- so it might be nice to stay there. Plus it's right near Breakneck Ridge, one of the most scenic hiking trails in the area:

Quiet idyllic place for one night? If it's tomorrow go to Monson, MA for Treehouse. It's about a 3 hour drive from NYC.

The Brickwall is located in Asbury Park, true. But its close to neighboring shore towns that are quiet and idyllic, especially in the off season. You can stay blocks from/right on the shore in Ocean Grove or Bradley Beach. The Carton/Kane/Brickwall suggestion wasn't suggested with the idea to stay in a crackhouse downtown. Although Asbury Lanes is an awesome place for a rock show.

That being said, I fully support the Delaware River towns trip, as mentioned in my earlier posts. Either trip is not much difference in travel time and sure to be big fun.

What you may be remembering is there's a small hotel in Cooperstown that has/had a special relationship with Ommegang and was the place that was used for a Brewery tour and tasting weekend. Blocking on the name but remember a discussion a couple of years ago and it sounded like a great getaway weekend and beer holiday.

Just a note about Philly. Its often described as "a city of neighborhoods." While there are some areas you don't want to visit (as there are in most cities), several of the neighborhoods have very walkable areas and pocket parks as well as excellent beer destinations. (Where else can you find a restaurant/bar in the train station that has 10 rotating taps and doesn't include BMC in their offerings?)

In many ways Philly is much more like a European city than it is like most big cities in the US. So you might want tto at least keep @Ranbot 's suggestion of the train and a visit to Philly on your list for the future.

Having done in pieces at least some of the drive, etc. @Ranbot suggests in his post I can second his recommendation.

failed to sell this to the wife who wanted to go to the beach. we drove over to long beach and it started raining right when we got there (and was quite chilly) so we left. since it was raining and really nothing to do otherwise, we stopped by the local beverage store (lol) and ended up at Barrier Brewing, which was the only brewery nearby. The beers were all right, but the bartenders and vibe were fun.

thanks for the ideas, though, I will definitely use the ideas for my birthday weekend!

The beer gods called in a favor with the weather gods and sent a message to your wife. Serves her right for ruining all the great plans all of us beer geeks came up with for you !

I'd go to Cape May. The town is just what you're looking for and very sensible after Labor Day. I haven't made it to Cape May Brewing yet but I've liked the beers I've had and my friends that have gone say great things.
