I've been home brewing for like 4 years...maybe try it before you actually say that. Pliney uses a hop extract for the bittering.

I used to think the onion/ garlic flavor was coming from beers that had been on the shelf a little too long and were starting to go bad but then I picked up a 6 pack of this year's Little Sumpin Extra and got that bad onion like flavor from it. I wonder if it has anything to do with how the beer is handled in transport, ex: temperature swings, expose to sunlight etc

I have made a Pliny clone from Vinnie's recipe numerous times. I started homebrewing in 1989. My guess is I was drinking fine beer while you were drinking mother's milk.

I have been drinking Pliny for years, and yes, it is spelled without an "e". No one I know gets any onion from Pliny, which isn't to say you are wrong. I also favor Columbus as my bittering charge and no one gets onion from my beer either.

But thanks for the words of condescension. Just another fail in this failfest.

I was correcting what that guy said...Pliny is bittered with a hop extract, not Columbus, as per Vinnie's recipe. Chill out Sgt. I Am The Master Of All Beer Knowledge...maybe try drinking one of your own non-onion flavored beers.

Only older DIPA I noticed the onion in was Weyerbacher Double Simcoe.

To me, Extra! Was extremely tropical and VERY sweet.

And you need to quote to whom you are replying if you wish them to know it is to them you are responding. I am sure you will get the hang of it.

And thou art equally offered invitation to chilleth thyself, Queen, or Queef, or whatever. Gotta say re: your username, that there is nothing like a good pun. And it is

nothing like a good pun:wink: Cheers!

It's speculative, like Tongo's "not much higher than 10-15%" comment. I'm just judging from the number of reviews I read and extrapolating.

OK- that's not really a good way of looking at it, then. I just brought that up because on the Thunderstruck topic there was so much complaining about onions, so I took it as a surprise that the beer actually was well-received overall.

Peter_Wolfe above (in post #173) does seem to be coming at the topic from more than a speculative angle, though, so that's always appreciated when the pros weigh in. And although he doesn't give a number, it does seem to be a small minority who are sensitive.

This part does bring me full circle, it seems:
Beyond the talk of percentages, I originally waded into this thread to clarify that the brewers aren't generally releasing 'oniony' beers (except for that one that @cavedave pointed out ), so I at least hope that the awareness is raised a bit at this point. "It's not the beer, it's you." was the post.

What people do in their reviews is still up to themselves, and I suppose Thunderstruck's rating shows that a beer can survive the sensitivity issue- but if it were me who had the sensitivity I'd just recuse myself, but I'm not much of a rater, anyway.

I have heard this one also. Especially if it used in early additions. I actual like summit for late editions and get no onion from it but your mileage may vary. I get it from simcoe. Not overpowering and not altogether unpleasant , but definitely earthy spring onion kind of smells. I do not get it in the taste just the nose.

Summit hops for me, as well. Green Flash Imperial IPA and Summit Horizon Red IPA, so far.

I haven't had DD in a few years, but my last memory was that it tasted like a viscous onion extract. Oddly, I'd like to give it a go again and see if I'd think differently, but I can't bring myself to do it at the regular price point.

I get a bit of onion in Alpine Nelson. Also to a lesser extent in Stone's Enjoy By when it warms up. Both are still outstanding beers though...

Gubna and Devil Dancer were full on garlic/green onion. Some of the early Enjoy By's were oniony as well.
