Onion bombs

Recipe for Devil Dancer: Dice whole onion. Soak in 12 oz bottom shelf vodka for 1 week. Strain onion. Serve resulting concoction in beer bottle. Makes one serving.

 

Call me crazy, but I had a fresh Grunion yesterday and I got a ton of weed and some scallion.

 

Keith, FWIW below is how Ballast Point describes Grunion:

“An International Pale Ale with a strong hop flavor from the use of two new hop varieties, American Mosaic & Calypso. Both hops give off pungent summer fruit aromas and flavors with hints of pineapple, ripe cantaloupe, basil, cherry blossoms, spruce & grapefruit. The underlying nutty malt base has hints of toasted bagel and fresh crepes from the use of Marris Otter barley and Carapils malt. Color is deep golden to a light orange.”

I have only had Grunion once (on draft at TJs Everyday) and I personally did not pick up any weed or onion in that particular beer.

Needless to say but we all have our own unique palates.

I get it from summit, mosaic, el dorado and nugget.

 

Oh God, yes. Total earthy, onion bomb. I couldn't tolerate it whatsoever.

I was about to mention it but you beat me to it.

 

I love Grunion and get TONS of onion/scallion along with some citrus fruits.

 

Needless to say but we all have our own unique palates.

For sure we do! Not saying you're wrong for not tasting the onion, just offering up the fact that it's not UNCOMMON for people to taste onion in Grunion. I have heard from dozens of others they get the same notes.

I definetaly get onion and maybe little garlic from Grunion. Can't say I dislike it though. On the other hand, I don't get ANY onion in Thunderstruck or Mosaic hopped beers.

 

Did anyone say Thunderstruck IPA? Very oniony. My bottle says bottled on 8/5/15.

 

Yes, I am not crazy!! I see from @JackHorzempa 's post that Ballast Point lists basil. That for me is a first to see anyone ever describe basil flavors in a beer. Again though, we all have different palates. There was no doubt Grunion to me had vegetal flavors, maybe there was basil in there.....hmmm....

 

Green Flash - Mosaic Session by far was the worst Onion Bomb i have ever had

 

Grunion was nose stingingly pungent with just straight onion/weed/dankness. Citrus more prominent in taste. But I have never smelled a beer like this though

 

Same as my experience. All the onion was in the nose. Taste was great, as long as I didn't inhale.

 

It's the hops! I just can't think which one.

 

I never got onion from Simcoe, it's a bit funky, for my palate it's off as a single hop brew. Mosaic as well which one would expect. They blend nicely though.y
