This needs to be printed on a T-shirt below a silhouette of a pint of beer.

    Grunion from Ballast Point.

Just had it for the first time last night, at first it was a more floral smell but as the beer warmed the "onion-y" aromas emerged. Not my favorite smell, but the rest of the beer experience was positive. The onion appears mainly in the aroma and slightly across the overall mouthfeel. I could see how the onion aroma could be mistaken for a malty, bread as well...I suppose it depends on the person's palate. Honestly, probably wouldn't pick it up again with so many great APAs out there...it was really the first BP beer I've had that I don't think I'd revisit.

I haven't had either variation of Gubna, but my brother has essentially the same palate I do and the original recipe Gubna is the only IPA or DIPA he really disliked.

FWIW I personally would not use the term "off taste" wrt these discussions.

To me an off taste is something like too much butter/butterscotch (diacetyl) in beer. Or maybe too much green apple taste (acetaldehyde) in beer.

Differing hop varieties will provide differing flavors (which will vary from person to person depending on their palates). One flavor aspect that hops can provide is "dank" which I am personally not a fan of but lots of other beer drinkers seek these kinds of beers out.

    Cheers!

A few batches of Enjoy By (12/26/14 I'm looking squarely at you) have been undrinkable because of an overbearing green onion taste.

Rushing Duck War Elephant same green onion taste, couldn't get through it.

I know some people taste onion with mosaic, but I don't get onion with it at all.

Combinations of New Zealand hops, including Nelson Sauvain strain... I must admit it is an acquired taste; still trying to wrap my mind/tongue around this flavor profile of earthy dank and oniony... As for the "dank" comments, supra, I remember when the "Mexican" de jour was replaced by the (much better :-) ) "Columbian Corridor" in the 1970's...just saying...

    Description of Summit hops:

“Distinct spice, earthy, onion, garlic and citrus (pink grapefruit, orange and tangerine) tones.”

    Onion means onion.

    https://www.hopunion.com/summit/

    Cheers!

P.S. Oskar Blues stopped using Summit hops in their beer Gubna since so many beer consumers perceived onion in that beer and refused to buy it.

Which DIPA's use summit hops, exclusively? I want to avoid them as much as possible.

And not everybody does. We all have our own unique palates and we will all have our own individual experiences.

Enough people 'reacted' to Summit hops (i.e., the onion flavor) that Oskar Blues decided to make a change.

The other variable is that hops have the ability to have varying flavor profiles based upon:
    • Time of harvest
    • The geographical location where the hops were grown
    • The hop age and storage conditions
    • Whole hops vs. pellet hops
    • etc.
    Cheers!

The link is for beers that are brewed using only a single variety of hop.
