In addition to the citrus/tropical fruit flavors, I always get like a green chive flavor from citra. Does anyone else notice this? I get it from all citra beers like zombie dust, so I'm thinking it's not from another hop varietal.

Personally I like a mild chivey-oniony hops flavor so this is a good thing

I've had a few, but it's not very often. I just recently had a can of Oscar Blues Pinned, it tasted like a combination of reefer and feet.

Onion and garlic, no. Dill...I don't know that I've ever picked that out in an IPA (/DIPA).

Dank is a mixed bag. I like some, but I'm not a pothead, so it goes overboard for me pretty quick. Like @JackHorzempa above, I'm not a huge fan of Hop Ranch, and it's because of the dankness. (That's not the only beer that strikes me that way.)

Citra and Amarillo hops seem to be the big culprits here, although they certainly aren't the only ones.

I've never felt that Enjoy By was overly dank. Yes, it's a component of the overall flavor, but the citrus and tropical fruit (and a nice balancing sweetness) are easily just as important, if not more so.

So, in answer to your question: no, I'm not particularly a fan of those flavors, but I can enjoy a level of dankness in a brew, as long as it's balanced by other hops and/or a very nice malt profile.

The garlic/onion taste isn't my favorite, but the one that I'm really not a fan of is the bell pepper flavor I've noticed in a couple of beers that use Equinox hops.

A lot of Tired Hands IPA's I pick out the onion and garlic flavors and I really like them.

I have to ask, why'd you keep buying it, if you keep pouring it out?

    Love onion/garlic in my DIPA's.

Hop Ranch has it, but for my money the most "onion-y" beer is Green Flash Imperial IPA (Summit Hops baby)

Yea, I really do like these flavors and aromas. Surprisingly I take zero interest in actual marijuana but I love the aroma and associated flavors in big IPA that exhibit those characteristic. (Chalk it up to a character flaw, I suppose). However I do not like Imperial IPA that deliver boldly on these aromas and flavors alone but leave the bitterness rather unsupported. The bitterness in which I am accustomed in standard American IPA has got to be there, and it has to be smooth despite the uptick of imperial versions. But bring on the dank!

Not really. I did just have another beer from Rushing Duck that had that same quality, but I assumed it was from Mosaic. They don't spell out what they used, unfortunately.

I LOVED the 4/20/14 version. Had the next one on tap, hated it. Blamed it on being hammered at a beer fest. Tried another, hated it sober. Wanted to make sure it wasn't a one off, tried another, hated it. At that point I gave up on it. Found it on tap again, had a taster, verified I still hated it.

Basically, I suppose I'm a glutton for punishment?

I'm tempted to try 4/20/15 just because 4/20/14 was so good. LOL. :slight_frown:

I personally can't really stand these hop flavors. If they're a small component, ok, maybe I can get by it, but when it dominates, it's hard to finish for me. Summit hops are the devil.

I 100% agree with you on the onion garlic taste and how it ruins the beer. I don't enjoy 'Enjoy By' because of the CZT hop used and the flavor profile it gives off. If you feel this way, and I'm amazed no one has mentioned it thus far, stay away from anything with Nelson hops in it. Probably the worst hop variety IMO. I drain poured my TG Zeelander. Straight down the drain without a second glance.
Someone mentioned marijuana, and I think that's why people like these particular hops. They remind the drinker of marijuana. So if you smoke you'll probably dig these varieties, and if you don't, you won't.

My mistake. It's the Nelson Sauvin I mentioned. Sorry for the discrepancy, I knew I didn't like the flavor and a friend of mine said it had CTZ. I trusted him. Shouldn't have.
But, only solidifies my dislike of that damned Nelson hop!

@Burntknuckles and @hopfenunmaltz , you might want to listen to the Beersmith podcast #96. Mitch Steele discusses how the original batch(es) of Enjoy By were dry hopped with Nelson Sauvin & Galaxy but since Stone could not obtain Nelson Sauvin consistently Enjoy By is now using Motueka and Helga.

    Cheers!

Not many acres of New Zealand hops, so that is not a surprise.
