I have a theory. I was surprised to simply see a Schilling beer bottled. I wouldn’t be surprised if they specifically bottled this beer because a “proper” beer of this type should be bottle conditioned. It’s possible they didn’t can it because they didn’t feel that they could properly can-condition it. The murky appearance and poor carbonation might be a result of poorly executed bottle conditioning. I wonder how much experience they have in this area. Just a theory.

Signing off from this awesome tasting. Thanks to @TongoRad for hosting and to everyone who participated and shared such a spectacular variety of bocks. Wish I could try them all!

[IMG] Just sneaking in here under the wire so to speak! Trying to figure out how to post pics etc! This was a quick pickup to get in on this Bock weekend! This is from Pasadena, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada..note big can! It is called "Bocky Harbour" The beer is flat and syrupy. Now, I remember I have 2 bocks in my cellar from Schlenkerla.....! Cheers!

Typically arriving after the party’s about over, I’ll second this one that fellow South Carolinian @goingbrokeonbeer posted yesterday... Wolves at the Door, a 7.5% Doppelbock from Edmund’s Oast out of Charleston.

Pours deep mahogany with clear edges and a lasting, creamy tan head. Aroma of sweet malt, dark bread, raisins and cocoa. Flavors follow aroma with raisins becoming more prominent, plus caramel, cocoa and a lingering sweet malty finish. Medium fine carb, medium body and a soft texture. Pretty tasty if a little on the sweet side.

Well, this will be my last bock of the weekend. This has been a ton of fun - thank you very much to @TongoRad for hosting this weekend.

My last bock of the weekend is Smoke and Ice a Collaboration between Freigeist Bierkultur and Goose Island. This was brewed in Germany and then imported to the US and sold through Goose Island.

This one pours a brilliant Burgundy tinged brown color. Cloudy, dirty, but not opaque. A very thin, weak, tan foamy head forms on the beer then disappears very quickly. Absolutely no residual head remains. Aroma is unlike anything I have had before ... there are notes of dark rotting cherries, some berry like notes with a subtle smokiness to it ... but what really threw me for a loop was this sharp, chemical or medicinal aroma. I'm having a hard time describing it, but its like this harsh plastic or chemical aroma. Put it this way, my brain is responding to the aroma by saying that is not something you should be drinking.

But, in the name of science we must ignore the brain and drink it ... and, well ... its not as bad as I expected? I guess? In all seriousness, its not as bad as I expected. The flavors are kind of muddled together, but I get some smoke up front along with some malty, dark bread notes. There is an earthy nuttiness to the malts. There is a certain spiciness to the flavor profile - pepper, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon - all swirling across the palate. There are some medicinal cherry notes in there. Eventually this gives way to an oaky, woody, earthy character on the finish with a pronounced and somewhat surprising bitterness. Its a bit "hot" for a beer thats 10%, although that is more Its not as bad as I thought it was going to be based on the nose, but I also wouldn't go as far as saying its an enjoyable beer to drink.

The feel on this one is pretty thin but slick and oily. Lightly carbonated. The alcohol on this one produces a strong warming sensation as the beer is consumed.

Overall this is honestly a major disappointment. That unpleasant aroma was really hard to get past, and the flavor was not nearly good enough to make up for it. I've had some really good eisbocks before ... this is just not one of them.

I think this will be my last one of the weekend event...although still 68 minutes to go! Squeeze em in if youre thirsty! Again, thanks to @TongoRad for coordinating and for all the bocking awesome posts about bocks!!
Also thanks to @thebeers for the generous mug offer, definitely created some fun and caused me to post on WBAYDN for first time!
Also enjoyed reading about so many beers from so many places, the best part of these events IMO.
Anyway, glad to have participated in another fun weekend event and circling back to some styles I dont visit enough.
Sampling this weizenbock brew from Brauerei Michael Plank as part of my order from OEC delivery service recently.

Ill do a formal review with the next can, but wanted to get this into the thread.
Im pouring at cellar temp into my weisse glass.
Beer pours a deep mahogany color with some dark cola coloring and a dense fluffy beige head of almost 3 cm. The aroma on this beer is cloves some banana, a bit of light chocolate actually, dark fruit, some other light spiciness too, maybe rye? the cloves and dark fruit are more dominant and seem appropriate. Not really any hop character here.
The first sip reveals a medium to light body with gentle and spacious carbonation. Texture is smooth and a little on the thin side I believe, but is fine.
Flavor is some brief brown sugar and then moves to cloves and banana, and a bit of dark fruit, berries and raisin predominantly. The clove notes linger on the finish and there isnt much of hop character that I pick out as coming from hops and the ABV is also well hidden for 7.9%.
A solid weizenbock for sure, glad to have tried another one for this tasting!

I’ve wrapped things up with more Schlenkerla Urbock, but this time paired with sausage, German potato salad with smoked paprika, some smoked goat cheese and smoked cheddar cheese. Very satisfying.

I really enjoy these tasting threads. I remember thinking I might sit this one out. I’m glad I quickly reversed that plan. I really indulged in this one, and I can’t think of one I had more fun with. Thank you to everyone who joined in.

Well damn, I had completely forgotten about this tasting event until earlier today. I was looking for beers at the store and saw this Doppelbock, Accelerator from Two Roads, and suddenly remembered this! I knew I had to pick it up since I haven't participated in this thread at all

Two Roads is a bit shaky in my experience, but I quite liked this one. It's pretty much identical in aroma and taste, bringing big notes of brown bread, nutty malt, herbal hops, and toffee with light dark fruit notes, mostly dates. A bit heavy for a lager but nice for what it is

    4/5 rDev +4.4%
    look: 3.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

A nice Doppelbock, and I'm happy I was able to jump in this thread last minute. Hopefully for the next tasting I'll be more present!

By giving in and posting his first official BA review ever, @zid squeaked out a Sunday victory in the crossover contest with his early-morning Schlenkerla Urbock post.

@TommyG22 came in a close second with his Lakefront Maibock on Day One.

@GreenBayBA could have won for want of a Shiner Bock review, but given his status of GOAT of Day of the Dark, he didn’t need it.

It’s great to see the goal of getting some new folks onto WBAYDN actually succeeded. Hope to see folks like @sulldaddy there beyond this tasting from time to time.

Thanks again to @TongoRad for organizing. One of the best tastings in ages!

    @thebeers
Thanks for the added incentive. It made it a fun event and was very kind of you to offer the prize and track the results.

I have only been here a couple weeks. The first weekend was the @scream VooDoo Ranger day and now this. Hope to see other events in the future.

Thanks, and you played no small role in that yourself. Crossing over to WBAYDN with your contest was a brilliant idea.
