Only refrigerate pilsners?

I know most American pilsner drinkers keep their Bud Lights and such in the refrigerator...but with a temperature of 40 degrees or so, are there any other beers that you think must be refrigerated? My cellar (basement) is usually around 55 degrees...should I store all other non-pilsners down there?

I am uncertain what your goal is here?

If you want to preserve the flavors of your beers then storing them cold (e.g., refrigerator temperature) is best whether they are Pilsners or non-Pilsners (e.g., IPAs).

    Cheers!

I think people (me) store beer in the cellar simply because they lack fridge space, as 55 degrees is better than room temp, but fridge temp is the optimal temp for beer (and pretty much all food) for preservation, as Jack noted. I would fill my cellar with refrigerators if I could.

Anything hoppy OR light and delicate should be kept cold. Cellaring is a form of aging and hops don't hold up great to age, and light colored lagers especially don't because anything off will be immediately obvious. Now a day or 2 at 55°F before drinking won't hurt anything, but beers you've got for a few months should be aging friendly if you're keeping them out of the fridge.

And to reply to the OP, I believe that most any beer styles go in the refrigerator. Just let some higher ABV beer like an Imp stouts warms a bit to room temps as you’re sipping it for an even more enjoyable experience.

    Nothing goes in the fridge.
I don’t buy beer to preserve it… I drink it. I prefer to drink all my beers at cellar-ish temp rather than fridge temp. That’s just me, but I’m very happy with my method.

As with any beer temperature discussion, the first question should be are you looking for the ideal temperature to drink the beer or to maintain it at it's best condition until consumption? (Oh, and then there's cellaring temperature, but that's a different forum ).

As an apparently semi-retired dude once wrote:
Blame it on the dog. "But we don't have a dog!" "Oh, yeah..."
But don't you want it to be in as perfect condition as possible when you drink?
If I had such beers, I would definitely keep them in the refrigerator. I'd never take them out of the cold temp. Or ever drink them. Eventually compost pile? Probably (might hurt the earthworms?).

Ahh yes, nothing quenches my thirst quite like a room temp pils on nice hot day. Or that tasty haze boi at a crisp 72 degrees

I do think that refrigerator temps of 40F or lower are too cold for most beer styles. Yet I will keep my AALs (when I have them) in the "food fridge". I also have a small "beer fridge" that I keep 10 degrees warmer, and serve directly from that one.

If my cellar was stable at 55F, and I couldn't have a separate beer fridge, I'd opt to keep most of my beers down there. I'm not sure if it was closer to 60F, though.

I like almost everything to be stored/served fairly cool. A few (not many IMO, but a few) styles benefit from being served warmer. In those cases I'll just leave it out for 15 minutes before opening it.

Am I the only one offended by Bud Light and such being referenced as a Pilsner? Lol
