As others have said, there are better breweries in the their price range. Not too concerned about who owns them. If someone handed me a red hook at a bbq, I wouldn't turn it down. (Perhaps, that's not as good as a statement as I intended because I don't turn down any beer at any bbq/social function).

Take 2: if I am out to eat and the choice is between Sam Adams, BMC, or red hook (longhammer is the usual red hook on tap, that or esb), I'll take red hook every time.

After college in 1986, I did the backpack through Europe for most of the summer. I fell in love with English ESB, along with German beers. Upon returning to the US, I started drinking English beer, but soon found Redhook ESB and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. While I stopped drinking Redhook a long time ago (even prior to them being purchased), I also have a soft spot for them along with Pete's Wicked Ale. Those three got me started drinking non-main stream piss water...

I agree with most of these comments. However every year I look forward to the Winterhook series with their slight twists and turns in their recipes. One of my favorite and satisfying brews that I wish we could get year round. Longhammer ipa too is worth the time and effort to sample. Nothing worldclass but very worthy of your time and bucks. In the world of the giants, at ball games and bowling alleys, i would also jump at the chance to have an ESB when given nothing else to choose from. A very commendable brew.

Redhook hasn't declined over the years they are just where they were in the 1980s. When I am stuck in a beer wasteland I can usually get a bomber (value priced) at a local gas station. My preference on those occasions is the ESB and sometimes Longhammer. I seem to recall their Big Ballard was quite good. I think Widmer and Pyramid are similar in that they are brewing (mostly) the same beers they had two decades ago. Which makes them great entry beers for transitioning from macro to something better.

At what point does "chicken shit" click with you?
    Anheuser Busch?
How about PBR, maybe Olde English 800?
... or do you enjoy everything?

The very second post in the thread sums up my thoughts on Redhook.

I would say so. Pyramid is pretty terrible and I gave them plenty of chances. They are worse than Redhook IMO.

Like many I drank a lot of ESB in the 90's. It still holds up very well in a style that probably would not be viewed as a prime canvas to showcase a brewers creativity.

Also seem to remember a couple of years during the late 90's when the Winterhook was outstanding.

I loved their Bourbon Barrel aged Porter & some of their LTD offerings. Here you got to catch them fresh, or they're sitting on shelves for what seems like years in Oklahoma...

I liked the longhammer IPA, tried the audible ale, which isn't the best. I will try the ESB next time, not expecting to be wowed...decent beer...nothing special.

I think you totally nailed it. We all had to start somewhere as craft drinkers, right? For someone who's used to drinking light lagers, a big ol barleywine or 100 IBU hop bomb isn't going to welcome you into craft. A light IPA light Long Hammer though... I think that's a great introduction.

I think Redhook and Widmer are just OK. I have nothing against them. I really like Kona's beers, though. Kona is a good price point for all-around good beers and mix case can keep myself and my friends very happy. I'm particularly happy that Kona started brewing out of the NH location in recent years because it allowed them to expand distribution to my area. I bought a sixer of their Koko Brown last time I was at the store...great beer.

The relationship between the CBA and InBev has been mutually beneficial. InBev has a big enough stake that they want to see CBA suceed too. I don't see a problem with it. FWIW... http://www.nasdaq.com/symbol/brew/interactive-chart?timeframe=1y&charttype=line

This is exactly right. Harpoon makes a much greater creative investment in their product than Redhook. Redhook has the pull of a few geriatrics recalling the good old days when ESB was a great alternative to the swill--about the only alternative. The odd thing is, the people I knew who went though an ESB phase mostly switched to Magic Hat. So I can't really support their choices, can I?

I initially dropped by to say exactly this. Saranac, Genesee/Dundee, Magic Hat, Widmer Bros seem to be exactly in the same range. Peak kind of stands out for other reasons (not the taste).

Not exactly. Redhook makes some good session beers - that is all. Nothing spectacular, nothing memorable, but good.

There seem to be some beers missing from their website. I dont see Copperhook or the Pilsner on there with the others.
