I'm in York, smack dab between Philly and Pittsburgh. It's like a 3 hour drive to get to either one of those major cities. There's still a few shops in the Lancaster and Harrisburg areas I'd like to check out, they're under an hour from me. To be honest, unless it's some incredible "whalez," I'm not driving 3 hours just for beer.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'll look into them and decide if I'd rather drive hours and potentially cross state lines, or pay out the butt for shipping. :grinning:

I work for a bottle shop that ships online orders. Often times, my boss drops the prices of beers online to compensate for shipping charges and to encourage online sales. I would assume most other sites would do similar things in order to make a business move line that worth the trouble

I tried it once. Nice selection but shipping was bend over. I found that over 3 or 4 months afterwards I could had bought most of it locally with a little patience. Plus I get the "thrill of the chase". I love stopping at a high end bottle shop after an overtime shift and spending 45 minutes looking for A "whale" to reward myself. I worked 8 hours on Sunday and rewarded myself with a Sierra Nevada Narwhal and a 50/50 Elisha Craig. Isn't that what overtime is for?

I've done it a couple of times, for me the shipping costs obviously sucks, but in retrospect it is nice to get beer that I would otherwise be spending just as much in gas/food/hotel on my own vehicle to obtain i.e. getting Wicked Weed in Ohio. Also, for the type of person who doesn't really plan vacations on being straight beer-cations, if I really want to try a said brew to compare with what I can get in Ohio, I'll just get a single or 4 pack of whatever and if it doesn't knock my socks off, I at least have the satifaction of trying it and next time I will just move on to something else or stick with ol reliable

I wish I could enjoy the beers that Philly has to offer, especially access to Russian River, but Pittsburgh does not get nearly as much as Philly does with beer. Goose Island bottles are rare to find in the Pittsburgh area. A few bottle shops had kegs of BCBS tapped but no one was selling individual bottles. If bottles were being sold they were either being raffled off or the bar was doing a bottle share. I mean, one beer store posted on their Instagram account "We got one case of Goose Island BCBS" Seriously one case?!? I feel the PA laws are restricting on the selection of beer we can get. Toppling Goliath has been on my list and I found a store that sells Pseudo Sue and you can buy online, BUT they don't ship to PA.

I've ordered a 6 pack of Westvleteren 12 from beersofbelgium.com. They made it all the way to Australia in perfect condition. They were wrapped up so well you could throw the box around and not break the bottles.

Understood guys. I understand the advantage to paying a markup and shipping vs driving 3+ hours.

The real crime is that it's not the law's specifically, but the "good ole boys network" of distributors. They control what part of the state gets what beer, plain and simple.

Perfect current example, heard that Western PA is getting ~10 cases of regular abyss, no variants. I could drive to Philly (when it was released, and get all 3). Someone in the joke of the LCB and the distributors made that decision.

The stupid laws are why we can't have bottle shops that don't have a bar or serve food, can't buy beer in a state store, and can't mail order.

I would like to order beer online but I don't think MA allows it yet. They supposedly just passed buying wine online a year or 2 ago but I'm not sure if that's even in effect yet. I guess our well kept up retail system balances out not being able to buy exclusives offline.

In Europe it's much simpler. I order on saveur-biere.com, very large choice, and shipping is 3.9 € up to 23 kg if you ship it to a nearby store partner with the shipping company (Relais Colis). However the choice in American craft beers is limited and I dream of the day when I can order directly from american online stores... Still hasn't happened...

I've signed up on a bunch of on-line stores, sometimes you get emails with specials and every once in a while there's a Free Shipping on orders over $100, or something along those lines...

Not quite...and the LCB definitely does not dictate where within the state a beer is sold. What happens is a greater portion of the limited releases go to retailers who move more regular product throughout the year. It's like a bonus, because those limited sought-after beers are a guaranteed sale for retailers. So, if throughout the year a retailer moves more regular Deschutes, Goose Island, or Bell's products they will be rewarded with a proportionally larger share of Abyss, BCBS, or Hopslam, respectively. For example, Wegmans in the Philadelphia area moves a lot of beer, so you can find stacks of Abyss at release. Unfortunately, bottle shops in lower population areas are typically at a disadvantage because there are fewer potential customers to draw sales from. It's simply raw sales numbers dictating where the limited releases go.

Add to that stupid law list:
    • Why you can't buy beer at every supermarket in the regular aisles
    • Why you can't buy beer in every convenience stores
    • Why you can't buy beer ....
    Cheers!
