Or do a 5 gallon batch with a double boil (or one after the other).

true. it's just that most people i speak to do 5 gallon batches, most recipes i've seen are for ~5 gallons, lots of equipment is for a 5 gallon batch size, and it seems like that's the quantity most people brew.

Yeah, it's cheaper per pound to buy MO and GP from Midwest than it is for me to go in to the store and buy it at AHS. However, Briess 2-row is like $35 for a 55lb bag at the store.

    <shrug> I get it where it's cheaper.

MoreBeer will give a buyer free shipping on orders over $59. They don't include 50 lb bags in that offer, but they have no problem free shipping 5 or more 10 lb. bags. Their 2-row or pale ale malts and a little over $1.00/lb. in 10 lb. bags. I like the 10 lb. bags better anyway. MoreBeer's specialty grains tend to be a bit pricier though, but the cheap shipping sorta makes up for that.

    Totally.
Unless you're the sole consumer and want more variety.

Me thinks the standard 5G batch size might inhibit some from taking up the sport of home-brewing.
