First it was pretzel necklaces, then antacid necklaces. An insulin pump seems overkill for the occasional festival or bottle share, so who will find a better solution for the pastry stout fan on the go?

That's like saying a bag of pretzels or a roll of antacids in your pocket is good enough. Where's the decorative flair?

The last round of Deschutes labels were panned pretty quick, so it looks like the next refresh is coming pretty quick. I really like them.

I don’t understand what they were thinking with the rebrand. Glad they figured out how stupid it was.

Since there isn’t a Block 15 thread anymore.

Saraveza is having a Block 15 takeover. Looks like all 3 variants of this years Super Nebula are on draft, along with some BBA sours, and Dab Lab.

It's different every day I think. When we stopped by today, they were just pouring the cherry chocolate and breakfast with the turkey. You could get bottles of the regular SN, breakfast with the turkey and the 2016 breakfast with the buffalo, and the raspberry, vanilla, chocolate version. Everything we tried was pretty good, but truth be told, the ba stouts we're trying now at Ft. George are better. Really liking the Supper club and whale shark.

Here’s my guess: “Oh crap, sales are slipping! What do millennials like? Random shit, like parrots with biceps, patronus charms, and scuba divers in Mirror Pond? Great, give ‘em that. What do you mean they only want hard seltzers? OK, back to the people who bought our core beers through the proliferation of breweries/flavors of the month. Any of those guys left?”

The award ceremony for the Oregon Beer Awards was last night, winners here: https://www.newschoolbeer.com/2020/02/oregon-beer-awards-2020-winners-and-ceremony-recap.html

No surprise that Breakside, 10 Barrel, pFriem, and Sunriver continued their strong competition performances. Other impressive showings were by Von Ebert, Culmination, Baerlic, and Stormbreaker, winning 4 medals each.

Central Oregon cleaned up pretty well: Immersion Brewing won Small Brewery of the Year (go Chris!) for their 2 medals and Boss Rambler won Best New Brewery. Worthy, Deschutes, Crux, Boneyard, Ale Apothecary, Bend Brewing, and Silver Moon all won medals too.

The show is livestreamed; way more interesting than the Oscars to me, and it's clear the night is just as much about getting the industry together from around the state to party as it is handing out awards. Some presenters have clearly been enjoying themselves backstage, some Brewers are less than gifted speechmakers, but the looser vibe feels more authentic and I enjoy watching those I consider friend getting recognized by their peers.

LOL! That's always my take as well.

There's a lot of interesting label artwork out there these days, some of which I think is pretty interesting or clever, and some I think is pretty awful or ugly. However, the quality of the artwork isn't something that ever has any bearing on my decision to buy or drink a particular beer. Sometimes I'll buy a "new to me" beer if I think the name is really clever, but I can't ever recall being influenced by the quality of the artwork when it comes to buying a beer.

I assume I/we may be in the minority when it comes to this.

I did think the new label jubelale was kind of ugly, but the beer tasted the same as always. So I continue to buy it on occasion.

For that one, they commission a different artist each year. Regardless of whether or not I’m fond of the design, at least I know it’s not part of an ad agency’s pitch.

Don't see cantillon on tap much in PDX, so thought I would mention that Belmont Station currently has the Cantillon lambic D'aunis on tap. $6.50 for a 4 ounce pour.

Based on your Avatar, I assume you know a thing or two about Cantillon stuff. How sour and funky is the D'aunis? I like trying new things and am tempted to get a glass, but only if the sour quotient isn't too over the top. What do you think?

If you've had St Lamvinus, it's very similar. A little bit more cereal-like quality to it. Depending on the year, it has probably a moderate acetic acidity to it. Nowhere near as sour as De Garde beers can get.

Thanks. Hmmm... I found the St. Lamvinus to be very sour and funky. The menu says the tartness is mild, but my idea of mild is likely different from the person who drafted the menu. Hmmm...

Decided what the hell. The overly generous bartender gave me a very generous pour, naturally. Just what I didn't need. The nose on this beer... it just screams cantillon. The barnyard and wet blanket aroma is just mind boggling. I assume either a sheep or a pig took a dump in the barrel. Note to self (again). Cantillon beers are not our bag. Do not buy them unless we're feeling especially indulgent and in need of self induced flagellation.

I swear to God... this beer smells like I'm taking a stroll through an over heated chicken coop.

No, no... I've had cantillon beers many times, so I sort of knew what expect. Although not my cup of tea, Cantillon beers fascinate me. There's nothing else quite like them, and I'm fascinated by the allegiance this brewery has engendered. I so, so want to be able to like Cantillon stuff, and I'm saddened by my inability to appreciate them fully. Even so... I plan to keep on trying them... From time to time. I appreciate your input and advice.

When you move here, you'll occasionally find lambic on tap at very reasonable prices in general. This isn't DC/NYC with $3/oz pours. I've had 10oz pours of the Girardin oude lambiek for $11 and bottles of Cantillon Kriek (375s) for 15 at The Upper Lip. Beermongers had Nath on for their anniversary for an absurd $9/8oz, which is about as cheap as drinking it at the source. Apex occasionally will have some, but their pricing? Well, I'll let you figure it out :-)

Weird. I wouldn't have thought dealing with large congregations of people would have been much of a concern for them.

All kidding aside, I wonder if this is something we're going to be seeing more of with other pubs and taphouses in the weeks and months ahead.

If the capacity of the pub/bar/taphouse is less than 250 people, why close at all?

C'mon, folks, let's not lose sight of the big picture: In times like this, we need beer more than ever.

    -----

Regarding the "no gatherings of 250 people for the next 4 weeks": My local Winco clearly holds more than 250 people at a time. Are they going to close? Are they going to hire bouncers to make sure there are no more than 250 people inside at any time?

When the governor enacted that prohibition, I know my first reaction was "doesn't look like the wife and I are going to be making any trips over to Costco this month."

"C'mon, folks, let's not lose sight of the big picture: In times like this, we need beer more than ever." Amen!

Whelp, Wayfinder has to do a recall of one of their Italian Pils, due to diacetyl: https://www.wayfinder.beer/recall?f...aqRbQbSlGUVN831t6b5qYy6K0w3GVuxQuHRclcidzcTWo

    Friends, Lagerlovers and Countrymen,
Well it turns out our number came up and for the first time in our short, bright history, we've had to pull back a release. Our Glass Dolls Italian-Style Pilsner has developed an issue that's not up to snuff. Although perfectly safe and fine by some, it's not up to Wayfinder's standards and we've made the difficult decision to halt its rollout. Only a few cases made it out the door to customers; if you have any unopened cans and would like to trade them in or get a refund, by all means please come to Wayfinder and we will take care of you. Quality will always be our top priority. An extra-special apology to our friends at Edison City Alehouse, for whom we created this beer in honor of their 5th Anniversary. We'll make it up to you someday, guys, we promise. More extra-geeky info about problem can be found here. https://www.wayfinder.beer/recall
