Welcome to the Oregon Beer News thread for 2023!

To start, New School Beer announced their "Best of the Year in Oregon Beer & Cider 2022 Awards" late last week. There were many familiar names and usual suspects in there. Congratulations to all the winners and runners-up.

(Side note: I was pleased to see my local, Wildwood Taphouse in Hillsboro, get a mention along with some really big names in the "Best Oregon Taphouse/Beer Bar" category.)

Is this also where we take wagers on what will open first in Beaverton, Breakside or John's? (I want to be clear I am very excited for both.)

Agreed. Not a lot of surprises on the list, and I completely agree with their worst new trend "award."

Personally, I would have taken Roscoe's over Beermongers for best local taphouse, but both are outstanding (and would get my nod for two best taphouses in PDX).

I'm just bummed the Beaverton location of Rose VL Deli has fallen off the radar :-(

It’s sure been awhile since anything about that was mentioned. This has me excited though.

That sounds promising! Looks like it's going to open in that space which used to be a smoke shop.

According to today's update on The New School Breakside Beaverton is now "before summer" but does explain some of the why in the delay. John's says March, so I guess they win. All sorts of tasty tidbits in this piece for Oregon AND Washington.

Looking forward to that new Upright location. Seems like it's been in the works forever. I know they ran into a bunch of permitting issues, so hopefully they're past those and can actually open this year.

I also like the sound of that new Logsdon location, especially with its walking-distance proximity to Wayfinder.

Lots of interesting stuff in there, really exciting. Did Logsdon decide to move? Last I recall (and confirmed via the Eater article) the location was further east off Division.

Also, Gus is leaving Wayfinder!? Or is this a second venture?

I drove by that long-awaited Logsdon Division location on my travels today and there has been a lot of construction recently, so I assume so. Definitely a hefty walk to Wayfinder unless there's a newer (forthcoming?) one of those that I'm not aware of.

Uhhhh... yeah. I don't know how I came up with that. I somehow plugged 201 SE 3rd St into google maps and thought that was the location. Looking back at the article, I have no idea how that happened because that's clearly the wrong address.

I guess you could walk from the new Logsdon to Wayfinder, but it would take a while. Could definitely make a fun pub crawl out of it though.

OBF has been canceled for 2023 and it sounds like there is no real timetable for a revival. That's something I never got to, mostly because my college friends all dispersed across the nation and my wife isn't a beer drinker. And now crowds like those just annoy me and I'd rather drink at home.

Interesting article. New School described the 2022 OBF as largely successful, but that's not how I'm reading the comments from the OBF spokesperson. That's also not consistent with my own experience at OBF last summer. Crowds were way down (as the spokesperson acknowledged), and the beer selection was pretty disappointing as well (which likely contributed to the reduced crowd).

The spokesperson is trying to sound optimistic about possible future OBF's, but it does sound as if there's no guarantee the festival will be returning anytime soon.

You're not crazy, it looks like NSB originally put the wrong address down (see the original version https://web.archive.org/web/2023011...ew-oregon-amp-sw-washington-breweries-of-2023), then did a ninja edit.

It also was 100 degrees out and miserable that weekend. I thought beer selection was great. Cheers.

Upright, Little Beast, Imperial Bottle Shop, Away Days, Loyal Legion, Ecliptic Moon Room, and Wayfinder. You could also add Lucky Lab and Brewery 26 for the hell of it.

(Yes, I know I didn't mention 'Mongers, Apex, Chuckanut, and Baerlic, but that's a supermassive black hole of beer which can be very difficult to escape.)

It's been that hot before at the OBF and they still got a great crowd. So I don't feel that was a factor in the crowd size for the 2022 fest.

Obviously, whether the selection was great or not is a completely subjective call. However, what's undeniable is that the selection was much smaller than usual and there were no breweries from out of state (unlike previous OBF's). Also, it seemed to me that most of the beers poured were beers I could find around town or at the brewery without having to go to the OBF. At least for me, that tended to make the fest less enjoyable.

It probably didn't help that there's that new Portland Craft Brew Festival to compete with. When they got rid of visiting national breweries and the rarities tent they got rid of what little set them apart. What they should have done was align with the International Beer Festival - which also seems to have called it quits - and make it one big bash. I'd actually show up for that.

Hard to tell if John's or Breakside is going to open first, but it's good to see both of them making progress.
