I don't remember Big Chicken being this good. Upper echelon TIPA for me and a nice bike ride to Beermongers made for a nice post-work Wednesday.

Saraveza is holding their annual B15 super nebula release event this Saturday (2/11/23) starting at noon. The B15 website indicates the new super nebula and various limited release SN variants will be available for sale that day, both in bottle and on tap.

For those who are interested in this, Saraveza only got a case each of the variants. So may not last long. Having a glass of regular draft Super Nebula at the moment. It's quite good this year.

So I had a brief conversation with the B15 sales rep, and assuming I heard her correctly, this is what I was told.

Apparently, they did not make a very big batch of SN this year. Bottles of the variants in particular are very limited. The single case of kocolate and breakfast with William Saraveza got are the only bottles PDX will see. While there's a decent supply of regular SN bottles, apparently B15 didn't keg very much. I was told Saraveza likely got the only keg of regular SN that PDX will see. On the other hand, they apparently did keg a fair amount of the two variants (breakfast with William in particular), and they should be readily available at various beer bars around town (she mentioned Belmont Station, Loyal Legion and Imperial specifically). There will also be an upcoming B15 event at Imperial on 2/25/23 I believe, where I think both variants will be available on draft.

I nabbed this at the New Seasons neat Orenco Station. Looking forward to cracking one (or more) open later tonight.

(They also have Breakside Life - Volumes 2 thru 5, if you need 'em.)

While I think this is good news, I'm puzzled by it as well. To me, the PDX market seems pretty saturated, but Oakshire and Double Mountain both appear to have found success with a PDX outpost, ex Novo and Breakside keep on opening new spots, and new breweries seem to be opening left and right.

All during what's frequently described as a very difficult economic climate.

    I'm confused.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of vibe Crux brings to a Portland location. The Bend spot, with it's very large outdoor area that is very dog friendly and a great place to watch a sunset, won't be able to be replicated in inner SE PDX..

As an outsider, I would say that the portlander appetite for craft beer is absolutely insane (Oregon in general has a wonderful appetite for good beer). I haven't plumbed the depths of Portland's bar scene but one of my longer trips was staying with some friends who were very much crust punks and even their divey haunts had plenty of good beer on offer and I saw plenty of people that I would expect to be ordering pbr tall boys and a shot of whiskey ordering a pitcher of breakside or rpm or something.

I don't know if Crux will succeed or if this is a good business decision, but as a person who tends to operate in a bubble where good beer's acceptance is exaggerated, I would never bet on a lack of demand for good beer from portlanders. And Crux makes good beer and they have a solid aesthetic.

The weird thing about the new Crux spot is that even though it's REALLY close to a lot of stuff, it's effectively in a no man's land sandwiched between a bunch of rail lines and industrial buildings. Doesn't help that Beermongers, Apex, Baelic/Ranch, and Chuckanut are right in the same area, are easier to access, and offer (IMO) better beer options. Plus, I think the draw of Crux's Bend location is just that... the location. Needless to say, the competition will be stiff.

I actually wish Crux would've taken over the original Vagabond brewery here in Salem. We need a legit brewery in this town, and unfortunately, Vagabond was the closest thing we had to that.

I'm also kinda bummed they're going to remove the plane. That was one of the most unique decor pieces I've seen in any brewery/bar/restaurant. And I know the Vagabond guys put in a ton of work getting that thing from BFE Northern Canada back into the US and into that building.

I agree with every syllable of this post, from the odd location to the better beer options nearby to the old Vagabond airplane with the great stories.

Agreed. The same thought crossed my mind. I really like the Bend location, primarily because of the layout, view and outdoor seating. The beer and food always struck me as secondary. Decent, but nothing I'd go out of my way for (I always felt their food selection was very overpriced).

Frankly, I think they're probably going to have a tough time of it here in PDX. Still, if Oakshire and Double Mountain can make a go of it here, I guess there's no reason they can't as well.

At least Oakshire and DM have the benefit of being in walkable neighborhoods with minimal competition nearby. Frankly, I think location is the only reason DM has worked (not much of a fan of their beer or food). Oakshire I think could have worked elsewhere in the metro with some competition, but not against what Crux is going to face (I like Oakshire and Crux about equally).

I believe you are on the right track about Crux and boring old Salem. In season loads of Salem people head to bend and Crux, so it would make sense. Though i never liked the Vagabond location.
