I apologize for this crazy question but I figured I'd make use of the wonderful resource of having access to all you nice people..... Question: Anyone know where I can buy large bottles of Orval in the general Los Angeles area? Thanks.
I have never seen or heard of a larger orval bottle size than the regular 33 cl bottle. But I love the idea.
Yes, I know. A good friend at a major beer store here in town also BeerMailed me and told me that neither he or the distributor has, or has seen, large bottles. I may be crazy....but not on this. I know that I've seen large format bottles. I just can't remember where (or, truth be known, when). I guess I'll just have to make do with lots of small bottles for a dinner I'm doing. Thanks.
Found one on Google Images: I feel like I might've seen one at the Pizza Port Carlsbad bottle shop, but honestly I could just be making that up in my head since they sell several Belgium magnums.
The Merchant du Vin product sheet for their Trappist line only has a single 11.2 oz. barcode for Orval. (For comparison, the same sheet has barcodes for the large and small bottles of Westmalle Dubbel and Tripel.) I know that's not enough to discount the existence of larger bottles (especially after seeing the pic SageO posted), but it does seem to say that they aren't imported here.
I believe that you've just hit the nail on the head. I may have seen a bottle in Europe when I was there New Years week. I suspect you're right; the big bottles exist - just not here.
