You're also making a sweeping generalization, though. If you and I are earning the same income but you have a wife and two kids, and I'm single, I obviously have more disposable income for something like a Taskrabbit. I would never use a service like that, but just because someone has that option doesn't mean it's a case of ruthless capitalism or income inequality

Nope, people that are financially in a better place than a lot of us just say screw the line, I'll pay out my butt and I don't care. So it's the sellers and the buyers.

Which brings me back to my other point. The ONLY way this gets a big NO MORE is limiting to like two 4 packs a person. Not worth the trouble to flip 8 cans for $50.

And I'll re-iterate, OH cannot possible monitor who's selling, who's buying, who's the out of towner. It is what it is. They did a lot of what we've asked of them today, lowered limits, wrist bands, opened early, honored the $25. @Kanger hats off to you guys.

I know I'm making a sweeping generalization. I don't think it's as simple as the have's and have not's in these lines. I think the scenarios I've presented definitely do occur but are not the norm. I was more or less commenting on the first impression of #LineDudes that someone like me or of a similar skewed mindset might have. This is all just a territorial pissing match.

I also think people are genuinely sharing these beers and they are gaining more popularity because of that regardless of geolocation.

Totally. And let's say they do it half of the time, 25 weeks? Like I said, if they have a short drive, aren't carrying all this beer in their arms on a train. Working 4-5 hours for $1000 is making as much money as a freaking surgeon. Just ya know, selling beer.

There is 111000% a black market for this and profit to be made. Some of us just want a few nice beers. Some think screw the fans of the craft brews, screw my conscious, I'm making cash!

I avoided my own advice got there early and could have bought a full allotment. I left two 4-packs on the table. This is beer it's supposed to be fun, I would never buy extra 4 packs to rip people off and sell them for a profit. If people really need to stand on line for 8 hours to by beer and make money more power to them. They are obviously not in a good situation and need the money.

I came across a philosophical line in the sand at the powdered cheese release a couple weeks ago. I was right on the cusp of the limits for Double Dry Hopped Double Mosaic Daydream. It was really the only beer I wanted.

I showed up at 9:30am right at the wrap around of Smith and Garnet Street and thought that they should lower limits if people are going to be accruing cases of beer in front of me because I showed up before opening and before it should sell out. The people in front of me (who probably lurk/post here) had a problem when I brought up the fact of dropping limits. They said it was my fault for not waking up early enough. I bring up the point that their friend had joined them in line AFTER I showed up and that was not fair as he might get the last case before me. I even asked if they were each (6 people) going to get a case and they said it had all been spoken for. They start clamoring about how he had to park his car (like i didn't have to park mine) and I start to get a little upset because how can they believe in not lowering limits yet allowing people to cut. Anyway, one dude felt guilty and he was going to hook me up but it was all for naught since I was the last person to be able to purchase a case (I bought 3 four packs). Pointless story but just shows how much the culture has changed.

to speak on this, how much of this culture is due to location? do you think that these types of beer consumers are more likely to exist in say Maine or Vermont? it's all about the people. the beer community is definitely taking a turn for the worse with these lines and insane prices on beer, but it's not all terrible. it's crowds like these that really make that turn evident. its a shame really. beer is supposed to be about bringing people together. only a matter of time before a huge fight breaks out at one of these bizarre lines.

I just have three questions: (1) does OH care about the line drinking?; (2) do OH's neighbors care about the line drinking?; (3) do the cops care about the line drinking?

This has the feel of the shit show captain Lawrence releases got back in the day before they decided to just shut it down.

You guys are way too concerned about things that are out of our hands. Just the way it is at this point.

Until people stop paying these assholes (the resellers, ie, shops, eBay) this shit won't stop. Unfortunately, I don't expect this to happen.

I also don't see how someone can think it's OK for a well off rich person to pay for someone to wait and not be OK with someone (presumably not rich) turning a profit because they waited. Seems a little hypocritical and beneficial to the privileged.

Message boards are communities to discuss all things out of our hands.

Other Half facilitates this culture, it's mutually beneficial. Somehow it motivates them to produce more hype juice beer as it does people to line up for it. There is going to be a line in the sand at some point. Just not sure its there yet.

I agree with everything you're saying, it's just the way it is now, and it sucks.

Like I said, though, this area is flooded with great beer and great distribution. I'll just have to get something else, bar the few times a friend hooks me up.

It's not all bad. All the hype and sellouts help them run their business in a way that they've been able to go from 1 or two cans every two weeks to the amount of beer we're (typically) able to get now. If they were charging $80 a 4pack for "special releases" and said, "Locals, we're ripping some people off so we can make more beer available to you outside an occasional really crazy Saturday," we might all laugh (more) at the people lining up.

It also lets OH know what the hell we are thinking. We called for cuts. They went a case to four 4 packs. We said why not open early? They did. How about wrist bands so the "bros" don't jump line for a full case? They did. We all were dumb founded by the merchandise shenanigans, they said screw that we will offer $25 no problem.

I'll be the first one to admit I've been pissed at OH for the case limit. It feeds the trolls. But, they've done what they've done because of this forum and people like us. It's out of their hands if people have line sitters, eBay sales, out of towners, and people paying $20 a beer on the internet.

The only way this gets a big kibosh is if they limit like two 4 packs per beer. The profits aren't enough to draw in the trolls. But, that's their call, and not ours. Baby steps people. @Kanger is on here for a reason. I hope one day they'll adopt it. I've never bought more than two four packs of one beer in my life.

    Share the fun guys.

But why this specific product? Are beers that create these kind of lines such a magnitude better than anything else out there that it justifies waiting in a line for 5 to 6 hours? It's not about the quality of the beer alone, it can't be.

I think it was solely for the "who." Trillium drew the Mass. crowd for sure. Monkish drew the anyone who's had Monkish. And our beloved OH. This was expected to be one of if not the best beers we've seen in a long, long, long time.

    I'll never know haha!
