Drank my first can of Tough Call tonight. Extremely forgettable. Should have been labeled a stout as there was zero presence of the typical malts which define the porter style. Was pure roast and lacked depth. Hate to say it but I’m not surprised either haha.

Having my first can of Mylar Daydream in over a week...it's developing well. More juice, less dank.

Weird, a dark OH beer was too roasty?

Also there isn't a real difference between porters c and stouts.

Or, the worst case scenario: Forever Ever is a midweek drop.

Forever Ever and IPA are on the keg list every week.

From my experiences, at least in the US, is that Porters are more defined by heavier use of caramel malts and higher AA hops than stouts which tend to be brewed with more roasted and chocolate malts. However, it is a very thin line between the two.

Yeah, when I started getting into beer I had a run where porters all seemed smokier and at the time I just kind of assumed that was the difference. I wonder how many definitions you'd get if you asked 50 people what is the difference.

The line is very thin but the gist of the style guidelines I see is that American stouts typically have higher ABV, IBUs, and SRM than American porters so I would characterize more assertive beers in the stout category, but the lines are so blurred that they're basically the same thing.

if we are going by bjcp style guides - Stouts or more or less slightly more bitter and stronger porters (American style speaking), they are also more likely to contain oatmeal than porters. Their grain bills and yeast are very similar.

Hi All, I'm heading up to NYC from NC this Thursday-Monday, we were planning on checking out Other Half on Saturday before lunch, but was curious if it tends to be nuts on can release days? I'm not too worried about getting cans since I'm flying and won't be able to bring much back. Just curious if the taproom is best avoided on Saturdays around 11:30-12 if you're trying to grab a few pints. Thanks!

What makes victory at sea a porter vs any of the countless other ~10% ABV beers brewed with coffee/vanilla that are labeled as stouts?

I’m also going to be there Saturday from Iowa, looking forward to visiting NYC for the first time! If anyone could shed light on the best time to get there to grab a few cans, also flying so I won’t be able to bring back an allotment. I know it could vary based on beer being released but if I show up at 10, wold I still be able to get all three? Thanks for your help!

11:30-12 will probably be pretty crazy since its right around release time. Saturdays in general are pretty packed at Other Half. However, its never really an issues to get a couple pints. You might not have a seat but getting beers is pretty easy in the new space.

Not the best answer but maybe. In general to guarantee yourself all available beers most people say to get there by 8:30am. But of course this varies greatly based on what is being released. The general consensus is this will be a mellower release so I think you should be OK at 10am for all 3.

I think the only one you might be in danger of missing if you show up at 10am is Simcoe + Wai-iti, but it really does depend on case counts and turnout.
