Years ago I started really getting into beer when the first CBS came out, and my go to stouts were the Southern Tier pastries- Choklat, Creme Brulee, Mokah. I just can't drink those anymore and it's startling to me how popular the style has become.

I also noticed that the entire taproom smelled like maple syrup. I've had a similar experience with cans of Double Stack.

I left an hour ago and I still smell it. Didn’t spill any... it’s apparently just completely coated my sinuses.

Wondering the same. I remember the last batch of GD tasting like old candy. It was hard to drink.

I think it's quite good. GD and AGE were the only frequently regular offerings way back when, and I remember people always describing them as having a 'diesel fuel' characteristic to them in the best-possible way. The return of GD is just as wonderfully abrasive up front, and just like the OG version, it mellows out and tastes better as it warms. Welcome back green diamonds.

I used to love GD but there was a period where back to back batches just didnt taste good at all. I don’t think its subjective to my taste potentially changing because AGE was always good regardless of batch and I can still drink any west coast IPA and enjoy it just as much as I used to. Glad to hear its righted the ship. I’ll be there tmrw so hopefully it’s still around.

    100% with you on this.

NEIPA popularity I understand. When I first had Hill Farmstead Abner (or Ephraim - I can't remember which I tried first - was at an awesome BT event in 2011) - which may not be recognised as a true NEIPA these days by some, at least not those iterations (even though I think those beers were/are perfection), but that most would agree are definitely the godfathers of NEIPA - my mind was blown. If someone had made those beers five years earlier I'm sure they would have been equally popular.

But during that same time period, Choklat, Mokah and (especially) Creme Brulee, while enjoyed by some, were openly derided by others on here. Blows my mind too that there seems to be an almost unilateral level of enjoyment of not dissimilar beers these days.

I'm sure people will disagree with me (both that this is a requirement and/or that these double digit OH stouts don't fit the bill), but to me, for beer to be beer, whatever the ABV or additives, there has to be a certain level of drinkability. I can happily take down a pint of triple citra. Or of BCBCS (RIP). But of the double digit stouts I've had from OH, I think only one or two have been enjoyable past the 4-5oz mark

PS I am hungover as shit so sorry for all the commas, dashes, parentheses and general brutal use of English. And the rambling too.

It really was insane how much it smelled like maple syrup. And a bit unfair, as the Pancake stout had just kicked and I had to endure the smell without being able to try it!

man i can't wait till these guys open in rochester. hoping for ba snowbirds as a surprise (they have had "surprises" each time they're released here)tomorrow!

surprisingly, the parking situation is very limited at the upstate location.

    unsurprisingly, this caused problems quickly.

hoping they expand the lot before they officially open

Or, the once notorious but seemingly defunct OH hate for locals has just migrated upstate.

So it looks like this version of Velvet Magnum doesn’t have any pineapple and isn’t barrel aged yet is $4 more than last years?

In other news, my brother swung past OH and they’ve switched to those stemless wineglass style tasters.
