One night in our Nations capital, where would you go for beers and dinner?

Not a lot of time for pub crawling and going to the Quebec brewers confernece after so not interested in making the evening all about Quebec beers. Would like to keep the focus on the best of the best of Ottawa and Ontario.

Thanks for you suggestions before time.

    Beers!

Do you have a car? If so, I'd head out to Beyond the Pale early'ish (they open at noon) and I highly recommend buying a 4 pack or Aromatherapy IPA, but you can also sample up to 4 beers and pick what you like from what they have available. Back in the Byward Market area, if you want to purchase Ontario beers, your best bet is the King Edward LCBO. The beer section is in the back, usually a pretty decent selection. For dinner and beers, about a 2 minute walk from the LCBO is Brothers Beer Bistro. Not sure how many taps, but you're sur to find a decent selection. Right, now, I'm seeing Nickel Brook Immodest, Cucumber Gose, Rodenbach Grand Cru, Brew Dog 5am Saint and a few other interesting things.

You can finish the night off a short 2 minute walk away at the Highlander Pub, where I believe they have Ottawa's largest whisky selection (others may correct me on that).

For a fun, Irish vibe, check out The Heart and Crown where you can grab a pint of the black stuff (Guinness) and enjoy live music.

    Hope this helps.

I land at 4 pm. So probably just dinner and a few beers after. Yes will have a car.

I would suggest skipping the Market. It's typically a disgusting drunken mess. Although, Brothers is probably still the best 'beer geek' spot in the city.

Centretown and Elgin are good bets. Union 613 is a go to for me. They always have top notch draught and food and they've got their own in-house nanobrewery. Town has Bellwoods bottles and amazing food. Further out on Preston you have 26ate who also have some of the better food in the city, but their beer selection is pretty standard. El Camino on Elgin is also a good time.

The market, is that in reference to the new Craft Beer Market. Sorry don't know the abbreviations you are referring to. Lived Centre Town in Ottawa some 30+ years ago, so know my around a bit. Could you please include some links. Ratebeer didn't list the places you are refering to. Thanks before hand.

No. Craft is great. But avoid Lansdowne at all costs during a RedBlacks game. Byward Market is overly touristy, but there are definitely some gems like Black Tomato, Chateau Lafayette, King Eddy, Brothers, and a few others.

Does Beyond the Pale have a tap room or is just beer to go?

No tap room. You can have 4-5 samples, and beer to go. Nice stop though.

Do you know if Wellington is open for drinks between the 2PM and 5:30PM meal times during the week? Thanks.

The website is a bit misleading right?!?! They are open for drinks from 2-530, but the seating is outside on the front patio only (no inside seating as they reset the dining room for the dinner service). From 2-4 they have a pared down food menu (salads, cheese plate, a burger) and then no food 4-530 as the kitchen is in full prep mode.

    Clear as mud !

Not really an issue we land at 4, so hotel, BTP for some samples and dinner.

Nice, you guys won't be disappointed; the Gastropub is a really nice spot. @Seany, be sure to stop by BTP as well for some samples and cans (AromaTherapy is a killer IPA).

Thanks, will probably hit up BTP, how is the Saison Tropicale? May check out Tooth and Nail as well.

Saison Tropicale is worth picking up. So far, Aromatherapy has been their best offering and ST 2nd best, in my opinion.

Tooth and Nail isn't far from BtP, worth checking out. There's a new tapas restaurant between both spots called Bar Laurel from the guys who opened another great Ottawa restaurant, Fauna. If they haven't ran out already, they should have Nickel Brook's lime/cucumber gose on tap. Haven't tried it yet, but big Nickel Brook fan, so it's on my list

Agreed with @Jerk_Store, Saison Tropicale is one of their best offerings, is really juicy with some nice doughiness and mild hop bittering finish. The Pale Ale Project is also a good, lower ABV beer and can be bought by the can at the LCBO down the street at Richmond/Kirkwood instead of the 4-pack at the brewery.

TnN is definitely worth a stop. It's easily Ottawa second best brewery and in contention for the first place (IMHO). There is a tap room on site and everything is canned and sold by singles so you can grab the full range if desired.

    Happy Hunting!
