As many of you are already aware, and as was mentioned in the NEBCO "What's on Tap" thread, New England Brewing's Facebook page came under attack from a mob of virtual protesters who were angered by the name and label art of the brewery's popular Gandhi-Bot DIPA.

NEBCO has since issued the following apology, but angry comments continue:

We apologize to any Indian people that find our Gandhi-Bot label offensive. Our intent is not to offend anyone but rather pay homage and celebrate a man who we respect greatly. We take great care in creating a product we hope will not be abused in the manner that Mahatma Gandhi spoke of when referencing alcohol. So many Indian people here in America love our tribute to him. Gandhi's granddaughter and grandson have seen the label and have expressed their admiration of the label. We hope that you understand our true intent and learn to respect our method and the freedom we have to show our reverence for Gandhi.
    -Sincerely, NEB
Thoughts anyone? I know I'll be sharing some of my cellared NEBCO gems in solidarity. Cheers!

And now NEBCO has put up a request that their supporters not stoop to the level of the haters by arguing on their FB. Feel free to share your true feelings in this thread, though.

    The label

Not sure I see anything offensive, but then I am not from India. With sensitivities today I could see how somewhat may not like it.

This country has become insanely politically correct, enough already. Also, we have become a Monday morning quarterback society, too many people with nothing better to do who sit back and criticize anything and everything anyone does, regardless of the facts.

    I fear for future generations.

I was hanging out at the brewery one day before Gandhi-Bot had been first released and Matt was talking about the name. Matt had said he asked some package store owners who were Indian if they would be offended by the name or the label and their response was they don't care as long as people will buy it. Now I know some package store owners don't speak for all Indians but it seems like the people being offended are actually from England according to their facebook. Seems as consumerism trumps everything over here yet again. Either way I don't find it offensive as it doesn't depict him in a bad light IMO. Then again I don't know a ton about Gandhi and necessarily how importantly he is viewed by that culture.

People are insane. Absolute insanity. All I can say is that it's an amazing beverage from an amazing company. I hope these Internet heroes realize none of us give a shit. I also really hope it doesn't come to a label change.

I was initially shocked after reading this thread, and then I jumped over to the FB account. It just annoyed me more than anything. What a bunch of hypocritical whiners with too much time on their hands. Gandhi-Bot is delicious, made by great people, and doesn't need to change a thing. These jerks who have a problem with it are just trying to cause controversy for controversy sake.

    Soon to be offended:

    German Rednecks:

    Charles Nelson Reilly fans:

People Against the Display of Nude Minor Waterfowl:

    Mexicans:

    And George Lucas:

    Oh, wait...

Edit: Well, the pictures I copy/pasted didn't come through, but I'm sure you all get the idea.

Name is obviously just lighthearted silliness. Not insulting to Gandhi in the slightest.

edit: and i should note, i'm probably about as far toward "politically correct" as you'll find on BA. there just isn't anything wrong with the name.

Pretty sure the majority of complaints weren't from Americans, and the repeated attempts at counter-offensiveness (via suggestions of products like Obama condoms and George Washington sanitary napkins) have elicited only chuckles and assertions of how Americans actually have a sense of humor when it comes to such things. I wouldn't be so quick to adopt a pessimistic outlook regarding the future as a whole.

I just hope the sea hag community isn't offended by NEBCO's depiction of them. This can get ugly real fast.

Weird how sudden it came on after being around for so long. NEBCO has always had a bit of an odd sense of humor. Obviously I don't care because I'm white and live in the u.s. and have a growler of Gandhi-Bot in my refrigerator, but honestly, I can understand why they would be offended. He's clearly a pretty revered figure. Whenever you fuck around with stuff like that, you're almost certainly going to offend some people, even if it's lighthearted and/or mindless. If you made a MiLK stout with MLK milking a cow or something on the label, I'm sure some people would eventually have an issue with it.

I don't believe this is a new label, it's been around for quite awhile. Are these complainers just starting to wake up and come out of the woodwork? Come on.....

This is a good point. Nothing's easier than taking a lighthearted or comic approach toward someone else's liberation movement.

in their apology they mention having great respect for gandhi.

i mean, i don't want to start up any political discussions here, but if you're looking for a hint regarding where they're coming from, you're not going to see someone who votes red across the board naming a beer zapata-anything.
