Just this week, I've had two canned IPAs gush on me when opened. Never had this before. The first was a Manayunk IPA that I got as an extra in trade, so I thought maybe it was frozen. Second was Hoppy Boy from Twisted Pine and I bought this and had it in the fridge for a day before. Both cases, nearly 75% of the can went out in foam and what was left was undrinkable. Has this happened to anyone else and is it just canning issues at the brewery or can other things cause this?

NO. The canning is fine. The problem is how they got to you.
Probably about the last thing a beer that is frozen would do is gush. That's just not something C02 is going to think about when it's kept at below freezing temperatures. Your window for wanting to experiencing these beers from whereever it is you are getting them from is probably way too short. PATIENCE.

Well one of them (Manayunk) came from Philly and I drank it two days after I got it and it was in the fridge the whole time. The second was bought at Total Wine and put in my fridge that night and opened the next night. Not like I'm cracking beers right out of the box or anything, so being shaken is out of the question.

Glad the authority on brewery canning could chime in. My problem is solved!

I'm speechless. Never heard of this one. Unless you opened it very warm or someone shook the crap out of it before you opened it.

I was in FL for a softball tournament and we tried playing a prank on the rookie. While he went to take a piss we shook the crap out of his Bud Light can. He got back, opened it and it barely foamed so that ruined our fun. You must have a very unique can like that one dude that had an "infected" Stone Enjoy By.

I've had bottled IPAs gush before and the brewery said they had an over carbed batch accidently get out...they had tried to get them all but was unable. Don't see why it couldn't happen to cans also? Shit happens.:slight_frown:

The problem is with the way you're opening them. Adjust your method and the outcome will significantly improve.

I've worked in packaging for the better part of two years, and have seen the worst of the worst of it as far as canning is concerned. What do you got?
    Oh, you had a question.
If it's overcarbed, which is also a likelihood. I sincerely doubt that two different breweries would do the same damn thing before releasing it to packaging. Are their cellar people that overworked that the prv is going off while they are up on a ladder detailing a fv and they allow an ipa to go out with 3.6 vols, which could also put additional stress on equipment? Doubtul. So, I'm ruling that out.
How long did you let your beers sit in a cool out before you opened them? There's your culprit.

Were the cans dated? I have had some older craft beers from cans that spewed like ron jeremy. They were probably a year old. I'm guessing some sort of secondary fermentation in the can. Happened with a couple of pale ales and some cream ales. if i drank it from the can, it wasn't too bad, but you couldn't pour them into a glass without waiting an hour to drink it.

Yes, I hate beer that is loaded with Carbs. Got to watch that weight.

Well I've also worked in engineering and QA for a brewery for the past three years, so I guess I got that. I was more asking if anyone else had seen this with either of these two beers before. Thanks for throwing out all the fancy abbreviations for pressure relief valves and such to give yourself more credibility (I'm assuming), but I'm sure the issue is me now. I mean, these are the first two cans of beer I've ever drank.

It happened to me last summer with Red Hare IPA, didn't think much of it until there was a Red Hare tasting event at my local, I talked to the rep...he told me they had a big problem, but didn't elaborate, he said they fixed the problem. It was a decent IPA, I should revisit

Yes, actually. It is. So, how long did you sit on those beers before opening them? There's your problem.

Just to switch gears a little bit on this discussion, I've always wondered what would happen to the shape of a can that was over-carbonated. The aluminum side of the can is so pliable, I'd think that the can would tend toward becoming a balloon shape. Was either of the cans bulging at all?
