I guess it's all a catch 22. If they broke the States alcohol beverage rules inside their business they could be sued, but if i get cans or a growler and drink them in a car then legal issues are void.

Theres' not much of a Dram Shop law in California, the most populous state in the union.

So the discussion isn't as silly as you may think.

The OP is not in Cali.

Besides, there are states (Alaska is one, IIRC) where there is no dram shop law at all.

And, where did I say I thought the discussion was silly?

I tend to think that folks that drink to get hammered GENERALLY drink cheap macro or liquor, and that folks interested enough in craft to spend the extra money are GENERALLY less apt to drink to get hammered. So - overall, I think that a craft taproom would have more customers like me who drop in to have one or two and done, so would have to cut folks off less than a bar serving mixed drinks and/or macro. I have not seen anyone hammered at any of the three craft taprooms I visit, but then again I'm not really paying attention to others unless they're next to me. It is up to both the patron AND taptender to monitor intake, and follow the laws - not just the taptender.

It is a Catch-22....the law in most states has you coming and going. We all just have to learn to be responsible boys and girls about our drinking habits, even though others (bartenders, clerks at liquor stores, hosts at parties, etc.) seem to mostly get the finger of blame pointed at them for our irresponsibility.

You said "it doesn't matter what we think"...I just drew a conclusion.

That was in reference to the law, not the topic.

< Yeti comes out, served in a full pint.>

I've seen this scenario many many times. One particular bar served LaTrappe Quadruple and Piraat in 20 oz glasses. A buddy's wife was halfway through her fourth 20 oz Piraat when she fell off her barstool. Had to be carried home, and she's a big gal. I would tell the servers and bartenders about the serving sizes, and they'd look at me like I had two heads. A friend of mine took over as bar manager at this place. I related those stories and others to him. He shook his head and said the toughest part of his job was educating the staff. After he left, they switched back to the big servings. Earlier this month I was in a place and ordered an Interlude expecting a snifter or a tulip glass. Nope, a pint glass.

No, I did not give an opinion on dram shop laws, I just said it matters what we think when it comes to laws.

Are dram shop laws effective at their supposed objective?

It doesn't seem all that obvious to me.

If the supposed objective is to protect the public from dangerous behavior by drunks, have there been any studies comparing states with dram shop laws v states without?

Given the political power in most states of the Trial Lawyers Associations, is the actual (if unspoken) objective to provide a source of deep pockets to be sued?

I wonder (admittedly, completely without any data but with an abundance of cynicism).

Don't give 'em the coffee. Coffee is a diuretic. Water is needed to break down alcohol. Water or juice is better. (I've experimented with that on my ownself. ) Mixing that in, especially after the last drink definitely helps to prevent/mitigate a hangover.[Along with not overdoing it] : )

Never seen someone sloshed at a taproom. I'm my opinion (based soley on one's I've visited) they don't lend themselves as well to getting ripped. Usually no games on, smaller pours for more money and a lot of people just seeking out some samples.

My usual bar hangout I see people cut off regularly.

Just seeing this, sorry for the delayed response. They don't give coffee to help digest the alcohol, but to waste time. Their belief is that you can waste time giving them drinks and food for them to sober up. They don't get into the science of it, they just know time helps, so they aim to waste a bunch of it.

I very seldom see folks in bars, etc. that have obviously had too much. Last time I saw that was at a family holiday gathering.

Problem is, too many of them are belligerent, loud &/or the funniest comedian on the planet, in their own minds. Cut 'em off before they get out of hand.

    Ah. Wasting time. : )
If you can get the drunk to go for something besides coffee, they'll feel better than with it, when they sober up. ; )
