Are you still commercially brewing? If so, where did you end up?

    Cheers!

Taking a sabbatical. Traveling. Talking to a couple breweries. Not in a rush to work.

Much more fun wading through what is a hidden gem and what is crap with the local beer scene than trading for hype monsters. You find out a lot about your local beer scene that way. My tastes have gone away from hype inducing style of beers so they do not even come up on my radar. Now if a brewery can brew an exceptional bock or dunkel weizenbock, I want to hear about it.

The few hyped beers I've had were very good. But, I didn't chase them down.
I drink local mostly, because I think fresh beer is good beer.
    Eat local.
    Drink local
    Cheers!

Maybe so, but every time I start to think that I just remind myself of many of the experiences wife and I have had at wine tastings at various CA wineries and even at friends and family events. Wine snobs make beer snobs look like amateurs. I still think waaaay more beer people are fun and laid back than wine people, but perhaps that bar is set too low for comparison :-)

YEP! The only time I spend what is, in my mind, a stupid amount of money for a beer is when I get a Firestone Walker barrel-aged series beer. The only reason i do it is because it reminds me of a great beer/food pairing dinner hosted on the central coast of CA by a great restaurant and Firestone several years ago. Wife and I had an excellent time and every time we drink one from that barrel aged series it is like reliving the experience of being introduced to those beers.

Im sure but I know nothing about wine. I can imagine though because of my time in the restaurant business

I actually think wine is a handy benchmark for measuring various aspects about beer. Besides using it as a snob-gage, I find that when I bemoan the "high" price of some beers they do not seem too bad when compared to the cost per ounce of some decent wines. A $30 /750ml bottle of wine = about $11.80 for a 12 oz bottle of beer, or ~$71/6pk of 12 oz bottles

Thanks BigIronH, for the post. It acted as a gut check for me.
I traded a handful of times on BA and met some great and generous folks. Then when the trading rules changed I moved to FB. What a mistake that was. I started down the wormhole of the hype beers and tried chasing a couple. What a joke!
People actually ask you to pay them 10$ extra per 4 pack to proxy from a brewery they were already going to... wtf!
Anyway, I appreciate the reality check that came with this thread.

Reading this thread and discussing the recent NFL draft made me think that sometimes it’s best to just pick the ‘best available’. If your at a bottle shop with a good mix of styles buy a highly regarded beer in a style that you are not super familiar with. A Weihnstephaner Hefe, Tap 6 Aventius, St. Bernardus Abt 12, or Unibroue La Fin de Monde.

over here, Monkish comes to mind. not to mention the spread on their glassware @ secondary is even more hyped & ridiculous.

Yes I mentioned Monkish in my OP. I too noticed the glassware craze and was taken aback at the 80 dollar secondary on some of the glasses. I somewhat understand the beer hype, the glass hype I do not get unless you’re a person who just instinctively collects everything Monkish? But then again I’m a can drinker by nature.
Yeah I came to that point off this post as well. From the sounds of it whatever you can get with relative ease is about the extent of most people’s chasing. I’ve had a couple generous BA’s reach out to me after posting this and offer to trade or proxy which was never my intention but also made me understand maybe the people charging double secondary’s or crazy proxy costs online aren’t the people worth dealing with.

Is this really a thing? All the limited glassware these places put out, does it really get traded or bought for huge price increases?

well, i'm not sure what you consider "huge". i've witnessed several pushing $150 a pop. to be clear, Monkish, itself prices them $15 or less ($12 is a pretty common price on most ware i've paid attention to when released).

I guess I know people who do the whole show poster thing, I have a few but I've never paid secondary. However I do know people go in early to buy and resell them. Same sort of thing I guess...

Wow! Hey to each their own, when it comes down to it I guess any collectible is the same way. Worth whatever someone will pay for it.

Oh man you have no idea. Get on facebook and just type in Monkish and there are several groups selling and trading the glassware for 10x retail.
