So let me give you a quick synopsis of my life right now. I work between 60-70 hours a week. I have a "day job" working for the post office and several nights a week I'm a bartender at World of Beer in Evanston (I know there's 41 other locations so chances are you're familiar with one). The day job pretty much pays my bills and I bartend pretty much for beer which is awesome but has a few drawbacks and allow me to relate my first world beer problems.

    1. Working too much/not enough nights to actually drink beer: I just completed a few trades this week (more on that later), and I'm just now getting a chance to imbibe the fruits of my labor. The nights I actually do get off I usually wind up going out to check out a new bar because they have a great draft list, etc.

    2. Too many trades: After wrapping up the two trades I'm still negotiating I'm going to attempt to go a month without even suggesting a trade. Shipping is pricy, buying beer to trade is pricy, and it's damn complicated trying to remember what brews are for whom.

    3. Too many beers not enough space: This is ideally the best problem a beer lover can have and I know this is the one I'll have the least amount of sympathy for. As it gets closer to winter my basement likes to get nice and chilly which makes it an ideal beer cellar, however my beers are occupying several boxes, and are spread out in about 4 different refrigerators. I'm trying to cherry pick which ones can just chill in the basement and which ones absolutely need refrigeration. I've also discovered a few times when I've straight up forgotten which beers I even have. Sometimes rummaging through my makeshift cellar (or a fridge) I'm sometimes pleasantly surprised at what's in there, senility is kicking in.

Anyways if you have any of these same problems or find your bank account consistently in the red to further your beer addiction, or any other beer related problem I'd like to hear it.

I always think I'll just go a few weeks without buying new beer but well every week there's something else exciting out, and the new sours from Goose Island were just released . . . .

I'm only "overwhelmed" because I'm a hoarded in my hobbies. I put in my 45-50 hours a week, my gym time, my errands, my other life things but I still usually find time for a beer a night. I buy at a bigger pace than that though. But that goes for all my hobbies over the years so I can "adapt" to such a terrible problem to have. Of course, this is exacerbated by the $1100 in car repairs I just had dropped into my lap today. Stupid world, conspiring against my beer purchasing.

"every week there's something else exciting out,"

Your justification for always buying too many beers is the exact same reason that I only buy beers I plan on drinking within a week or two. There's always gonna be something else exciting next time I go shopping.

Cut back on going out and be a solitary hedonist at home. Trade more. Buy more for home consumption. Savor.

So you're running your finances into the red, your hoarding is creating space problems even though you have an entire basement, you haven't progressed beyond obsession in the trading ring, and you're happy as a hatter that you're starting to forget things.

congratulations. you are a poster boy. of something.

I live in an apartment with a girlfriend who, despite being quite accommodating of my beer collecting habit, doesn't want there to be no room for actual food anymore in the normal fridge (I have a 4.7L beer cellar that's supposed to do that). I've been nearly stressed out about the fact that I need to drink down the collection about 15 bottles as quickly as possible, meanwhile fresh hopped beers and other "must haves" keep coming out. I say nearly stressed because as soon as that thought crosses through my mind, it's quickly followed by "hah, that's not a real problem".

These are the first world problems that other first world problems joke about.

Stating you have too many beers has become way too much of the norm of this site these days. Its like complaining about too much money. I don't think anyone wants to hear it and personally if you can't drink it before it's "bad" don't buy it and if you can't give it away then just pour it on your lawn.

Buying too much is definetly the norm these days. Other beer geeks consider me an alcoholic because I am always almost out of beer but I just buy 1 – 15 beers and don’t buy more until I finish those. Which is something that makes me seem crazy to all the other beer geeks.

If you eliminate trading then you will definitely improve your budget. The only other thing to do from there is limit yourself. Shop at the grocery for daily beer and only go to the bottle shop once per month or something like that. Or use psychology tricks like I walk to the bottle shop and only take what I can carry home. If it's a money problem it will be solved one way or another because you have bills that have to come first. Your common sense won't let you go too far. If it's not a money issue then it's harder because our own nature can be hard to defeat.

Stop trading for a while. Stop going out to bars for a while. Problem (mostly) solved.

I enjoy drinking local, so this isn't a problem for me. Maybe find a few things you like and can get easily to fall back on for a while.
