Is the Quad brewed with plums different than the old Quad that was available before? Same goes for the Saison brewed with mandarin oranges and peppercorns versus the old Saison. Thanks!

The Ovila is definitely a different beer than Ovila w/Plums.

All I know is I bought a 4 pack of the Ovila with plums for my friend and now I want to buy one for myself. Awesome beer.

The original Ovila Quad was not brewed with plums.

They are different. I grabbed some of the Quad, with plums, yesterday. I thought it was pretty good, and the wife absolutely loves it.

All I know is that I've had Bourbon Barrel Aged Ovila and holy mother, that is the best Belgian Quad I have ever had.

I'm still really confused with regards to the quad w/ plums... got a ton of chalky flavor out of it when I had a bottle, almost pepto-bismal... and some really gross cough syrup flavor. I'd almost think that the bottle hadn't been properly stored or something, but it was definitely fresh. Huge letdown from all of the Sierra Nevada beers as well as quads that I've had in the past.

The one time I had on tap was quite good. I noticed a twinge of lactic acid that was interesting, unexpected, and out of place IMO. Pannepot is better. Even the new Alesmith Decadance impressed me more stylistically speaking.

    Thanks, I'll check those out.

I just remember it being so sweet and smooth. Someone on BA described it as liking a sweet bourbon barrel.

Yeah, I should have commented in that thread when it was going strong. I got a green apple twinge from the barrel, along with the vinegar. It was similar with the BA Dubbel, except no vinegar. I'm a ***** for barrel aging though so I might be over sensitive. Both were damned good though.

I've gathered as much of the BA Quad and Dubbel as I can find but have held back on the plum...sounds like I should give it a shot.

It seems to me that OP is asking if the base beers are different.

Ovila with plums was my favorite of the 2. Very different beers

Im of the understanding that the Ovilla Abbey applied for their trappist license a while back. Does anyone know what has become of that? I personally love most of what ive tried from them, and im not really into belgians. It would be awesome to have and American Trappist brewery.

Seems unlikely that the Abbey of New Clairvaux would have applied for official Trappist recognition for the beers brewed at and by Sierra Nevada - so, without having a brewery on the abbey grounds under Abbey management, since those things are major aspects of the "Trappist" designation.

I was hoping you would reply to this, you always seem to know your stuff.
So maybe the information i got was incorrect? i heard SN had lent them the brewing equipment, and was under the impression that the brewing took place at the Abbey.

I was asking if the old quad is the same thing as the quad with plums (i.e. now it is called quad with plums whereas the old bottles make no mention of that).

Oh, then no. Different beers... not sure if the base beer is the same though.

Anyone know when the saison w/mandarin oranges and peppercorns will be released?
