Happened to get a last minute invite this evening, from a friend who works for a local distributor. A large regional brewer was holding a "VIP" tasting at a local sports bar, and since we were dropping off some beer to him anyway, we got included. Now, the VIPs were bar/restaurant employees/managers and the brewer had a regional Rep there. There was plenty of beer, and they bought dinner as well. The point was to show the folks a good time, and then, hopefully, they buy some of breweries product.

Now, is this P2P? If one is using a strict definition, then probably yes. This kind of thing happens in every industry though, and, just because it's alcohol that's being sold, that makes it wrong? I dunno. BTW, I brought the subject up with rep,and he says it definitely happens in Seattle, but mostly at "venues". If you see a concert, or an artist, sponsored by a beer, some kind of deal went down. But, that artist probably gets sponsored for his guitar strings as well. So much confusion.

    Where do I begin.
-pint nights. 99% of the time, a brewery or distributor is required to provide the pint glasses for give aways. This resul
I honestly don't know where to begin.
-bars buying 4 kegs and getting the 5th free
-bars buying a "can of beer" of beer on an invoice for 1$ that happens to be a 58L "can"
-free trips to Germany for buying the most beer
-free trips to Alaska barleywine fest
-every Sierra Nevada beer camp beer pretty much
-huge goose island industry events where everything is free
-watching a pyramid rep just pour out and purchase an entire keg of Widmer to put pyramid on
-only sell rpm to people giving it a permanent handle
-not selling enough damnation to get Pliny
-watching someone order 20 cases of damnation only to be told that all the damnation was allocated to the current customers who wanted Pliny...
-distributors installing tap systems for cost of parts.
-buying space ok grocery store shelves.
-donating swag in return for keeping a beer on for a month
-a 50$ a week "sponsor" few for having your beer be on a happy hour menu
-a bar owner saying "swipe your card for 200$ and we'll put a keg of your choice on for 2 months"
-bars saying you must sponsor their trivia night once a month to get on tap
-bars saying you must donate 48$ worth of glassware in order for you to be featured.
-distributors giving box seats to sounders and Seahawks games
-doing custom fridge installs for cost of parts
    -countless free tap equipment
    -mandatory bulk discounts
-enforcing a "buy two half barrels of our normal stuff and you can buy a 1/6bbl of our sour"

And that's just off the top of my head.

Sorry for bad grammars and spellinggss

In 14 years selling here in E. WA, most of what I've see has been "give me a neon and i'll put your beer on" and some "give me free stuff to give away for a tap takeover night". I honestly had never had anyone flat ask for money from me. One place told me "give me $5,000 to buy draft equipment/refrigeration and I'll only sell your beers." Oddly enough the guy was a recent transplant from Seattle....

How does the whole neon sign business work? Are there rules behind it? Fremont had a really cool firebird neon sign made for Toronado recently, and I'm assuming it's not a P2P situation.

Technically, neons are like tap handles; they're owned by the brewery, on loan to the bar. I've seen brewers pick up tap handles before, never a neon.

As an aside, a few (5-ish?) years ago, WALCB put a new rule in where a bar can only have so much neon facing the street. IIRC, it's 4 signs or X square inches, whichever is greater. Gots to protect the chillens' ya know.

P2P is definitely an issue and Fremont does not play. We sell beer on quality. Period. Matt Bonney is a friend and the sign is a high five for his being awesome. Trust me, he paid for it....however, if anyone has Seahawks tickets, we'd like four for the next 49s game:slight_smile:
