... after a more than two decade absence - Opening Day today, in fact.

Oh, capacity of the brewery reduced somewhat - down from 5.5 million bbl/yr to 4,000.

Nice - but very sad - "urban explorer" video of the actual original brewery. The copper kettles still there (!) - which must have the penny-pitching Paul Kalmonvitz rolling in his grave. Most of his other breweries which closed during his life were gutted, and, in many cases, the equipment shipped to China.

Gotta laugh at Pabst's "avoidance" of certain topics in its very complicated recent history. Their HISTORY webpage, for instance, jumps from 1958 to 2015

Haha. Pabst is now making a NEIPA. That's goofy.

That said, I'd love to try their Keller beer, helles, and maibock. And yeah, I guess the NEIPA too.

That would still be worth a stop if I'm ever in MKE. Even if it's average at best, it would still be cool to see the old brewhouse etc. I'm pretty sure Pabst is now independent again since 2014..anyone know if they still contract out their production ot MillerCoors? Maybe they do for the mass production, but this stuff will be local.
Anyhow, I'll take Amtrak up one day this summer to check it out.

Not sure what you mean by "independent again" - they have had something like 5 different owners since the 1970s.

The largest percentage of the production is still brewed at MillerCoors facilities (which started in the late 1990s), with some smaller brands done at Cold Spring, City, etc.

I just meant is Miller brewing all their beer. I worked at Pabst like 10 years ago when it was in a trust, and the company was just a marketing company at that point and didn't produce any product.

If you want to see the old brewhouse, you have to visit the lobby of the Brewhouse Suites:

(They've cleaned up the place a bit since the video linked above).

A lot of the rest of the brewery complex is part of
Best Place at Pabst. Neither are owned or controlled by Pabst Brewing Co.

It's too bad they're not brewing a "more authentic" version of Pabst Blue Ribbon on site. Probably didn't install a cereal cooker.

 Pabst used to boast about its use of corn grits rather than the syrup that "some brewers" used as short cuts...

But that was back when there was a Pabst Brewing Co., rather than a contract-brewed beer marketing firm cobbled together by a charitable trust that grew out of the old S&P Corp.

A few years ago, the PBR website even admitted to corn syrup adjunct (which is the standard in many of the MC breweries):

I'm not sure I want anything to do with "Pabst" after I saw an article about how the new owners negatively treated the employees who'd done the work to revive the brand (via BPR) before they bough it.

On top of that I certainly don't want to see them try to cash in on a hot new style like NEIPA - that just doesn't make sense.

Got a link to "BPR" - which I assume is a beer publication/website? Initials don't ring a bell for me.

The owner of Pabst Brewing Co. during the revival (which, by some accounts, was consumer-driven and Pabst was initially unaware and had to catch up with it) wasn't much better an employer.

The S&P Corp/Kalmanovitz Charitable Trust closed over a dozen breweries and destroyed hundreds, if not thousands, of jobs over the years, and even used a legal technicality to deny retirees their benefits when they closed Milwaukee.

Also, having a "charity" own the company for about 20 years was also an illegal tax dodge.

And, of course, the owners in-between the Trust and Kashpar/TSG - the Metropoulos family - didn't have that great a record with their employees, either:

Yeah, those snotty rich kids Daren and Evan Metropoulos, they're the ones I dislike.

I did appreciate the revival of the Burton Ale, and there are a few other beers in their portfolio that I either haven't tried or would try again, and despite the fact that the brand is now tainted in my mind (..."used a legal technicality to deny retirees their benefitswhen they closed Milwaukee." it is a new start. But can you use such a ragged and tattered brand name to introduce new beers at this point?
