Hi all, I brewed a pumpkin ale yesterday, which mostly went well but for a twist. I used Wyeast 1056 and dutifully took it out of the fridge, smacked and shook and let it sit for a few hours at 70f while I brewed. I then got a little suspicious of the fact that it didn't inflate, but brewing was done and I was ready to pitch so I did ... and discovered the unopened nutrient packet inside. A day later the airlock is bubbling, not vigorously but noticeable. Ambient temperature is 65-70 or so. The question is: should I just let it go and figure the yeast will go at their own pace? Or do I need to make an emergency LHBS run, and if so, what do I need to get? Yeast was super fresh, mfg date sep 12. Recipe is an amber pumpkin ale inspired by CBC's the Great Pumpkin: 4.5lb Munton's Light DME 0.5lb Crystal 60 0.25lb Chocolate 30oz canned unseasoned pumpkin, baked for an hour at 325 then added to boil @ 60 10g Magnum @ 60 5g Pumpkin spice mix @ 20 Thoughts?
Most of the time mine don't inflate either. I only give them a few hours but have never had a problem. It sounds like everything is going allright. What was your OG?
Canned pumpkin sounds like a bigger problem. But if you took an OG, take another reading. That will tell you if you need to go get more yeast or not.
Just ran it through beertools and they came up with an og of 1.043, you should be fine with one pack of yeast
It wasn't the lack of inflation per se that worried me, but rather that the nutrient pack never opened. I stupidly forgot to check OG
I was suspicious, but saw a few sources that say canned pumpkin is ok if you bake it first on a sheet (I did 60min at 375).
All smaking the nutrient pack does is show you that the yeast is viable, at this point though you already know that your yeast is viable.
