I go fishing almost everyday after work and bring a brew or two. I'll usually wrap them in my extra clothing layer and put that in my bag so I don't have to bring a cooler and it works just fine. Usually its an all day or a terrapin hi-5. Also I bought a phany pack that can carry an open can and some tackle and use it as a wading belt.

I've definitely hiked with cans before.

Anyone ever try using a plastic/nalgene growler? I've got one, but I've never actually used it.

Filling a Nalgene bottle is somewhat common around here (but, we've got pretty generous growler rules), but usually it's just for walking around town, going to the park kinda stuff, not actual trail hikes.

I say pack mostly macro. High chance something could go wrong and you don't want to waste good beer. Maybe 1-2 cans of something good at best.

No kidding. If I have my choice, I always cans. Hop Nosh, Torpedo, SNPR. Wish we'd get Scup in. NO difference in taste.
Easier to store. Crush em when ur done. No brainer

I second (twenty-second?) the "can" idea... especially since there are so many good options now.

Palcohol cold be a solution, when/if it becomes available. Alcohol in powdered form would be the perfect companion in the outdoors, it probably wont be available in any tasty beer flavors though.

And then there's this stuff from Pat's Back Country Beverages:

It's an interesting concept, doing beer from concentrate. I remember reading about it a while back and it looks like they worked out some of the kinks with the issue of flat beer. I've wanted to try this out, but unfortunately it cannot ship to PA (stupid beer laws). It seems like it would be an excellent backpacking/outdoors beer system, provided the beer doesn't taste terrible.

Most of the usual suspects have been mentioned. I rarely hike with anything but water but I did take a 2008 Bells Expedition bottle with me when we climbed the Grand Teton last year...special occasions deserve special beers.

    Ha! I wasn't even alive in 1983.

Truth of the matter is, there's pretty much no good beer to be had in cans in BC. If you're buying cans here, you're buying macrobrew. The only exception I can think of is Nelson. I used to like After Dark back when it came in bottles, but this summer I tried it, their IPA, and their honey blonde ale in cans and they were all gross. I couldn't even give the stuff away to my friends, who certainly aren't beer snobs. So, nope. If I'm buying beer in cans, I'm buying European macrobrew, and that's not what I want to be drinking all the time.

Damn America is way bigger on cans then. Like 25% of our craft 6 and 4 packs are cans.

Bring cans plus something that allows you to drop the beer in the water. I've done several hiking trips where we stash beer in the river and then have our allocation at night.

I'd say Two-Hearted just because. By the way, to anyone that hasn't read Big Two Hearted River by Hemingway should make the effort.
