Fair points. I said above that if it was kind of easy beer to get then it's best to accept the payment and move on IF the other trader can't come up with a box to OP's liking. I'd hope that >80% of the time this can happen. But sometimes it won't.
I don't know who the other trader is, there are few people out there with reputations where you wouldn't ask for a mule thank you box because you know they'll get you back.
Or maybe OP wants the sender to become a new regular, in which case there's no need to ask for this. Just talk to the sender and see if they want to make it a occasional thing and then the two traders can send back and forth and all goes on!

But as I said above, if it involved more coveted beer like Paraguesia and it is a pretty targeted one-time deal, would it be reasonable to settle for "Sorry I can't replace the bottle, I'll send you money for the Paraguesia 1,2 and ANTEAD set you set you sent me." That's a huge opportunity loss for the person who sent those beers who could otherwise use them to get their original desire, a different desire, or drink them [I'm not totally insane, I drink most my beer ].

I agree it wasn't a muling request from the start, it was a trade for agreed upon bottles. If a desired bottle breaks it sucks for both people. But the convention is that it is on the sender to make it right, whatever that is which is agreeable to both parties. Any burden is still on the sender.

I've never received a broken bottle luckily, but the chances the sender wouldn't be able to make it up I think were pretty slim before I took a trade break. I've received some leaky ones, I just chill them down to drink ASAP and go on with life. I can't say exactly what I'd do til I'm in that situation, where a target beer I wanted to save or share has a problem. But I did have one of my 50 trades have a little bump in it, so I just asked the guy if we could set up another trade to iron it out, and the second trade made us both happy.

You are the first trustee I've seen say they don't want thank you beers. Asking that they pick up things for you, even if not mandatory, is potentially a very nice benefit to you. It's arguable whether or not people would find it easier to send thank you beers with a shipper or hunt down a few beers you request a month later, but I'd lean toward the former. However, I'm not here to analyze your situation. You're obviously an accomplished trader. To the most recent person I talked to about trading, I told them if they wanted to send extra bottles to make it a hybrid trade-mule, I'd take responsibility for all extra bottles (and some of the in-trade ones as the extra bottles increase), and pay for most or all of the shipping. I think that's pretty good for a potentially no limit release.

Ultimately it's between you and your trade partner to hash things out. I'd have no problem approaching it one way or another. The key is being flexible based on comfort level. Cheers, my friend!
