Drinking Moms Hefeweissen and it says they use their Pacman Yeast on this one. How can they call it a Hefe if it is using their standard yeast?

I am not familiar with this yeast or beer at all so hopefully this isn't a dumb question.

While it's unfortunately not unknown for american brewers to refer to an american style wheat (erroneously) as a 'hefe,' 'Mom's Hefeweizen' is extra weird, because they claim (despite the (german) name and the (american) yeast) that it's a Belgian Blonde.

Lolz even stranger. I was saying to my girlfriend it should almost be called an American Wit. Strange and misleading to me.

alot of breweries will use one house strain for everything. until recently, all brewers could reliably use the same yeast for every beer they made with good results. it's only lately since craft brewers have decided to brew a wide variety of styles that this is an issue.

Pacman is one of those strains that is versatile. there is no rule that says a certain strain of yeast must be used for a particluar style. some yeasts do a passable job doing alot of things. sometimes the yeast is such a part of the style it is hard to imagine not using the specific strain.
Pacman is kind of like a panel van of yeasts, it gets any job done well enough.

but you are right that a Hefe is not going to be very Hefe at all without using the proper yeast. and Pacman is not that yeast if you ask me.
    Cheers.

Rogue's hefeweizen or Maibock. Their like a Taco Bell "Gordita" - fine as long as you are unfamiliar with the real thing. Perhaps they are just too arrogant to be embarrassed.
