I'm looking for some recommendations on a beer that will help reset my palate. Basically, I've been drinking a lot of TRIPA, Ruinten, and Devil Dancer, and they don't taste the same anymore. I suspect that I have blown out my palate...

Anyone else experience this? Too much hops making you numb to the greatness of hoppy beers? If so, how did you reset your palate?

    Thanks.

Try a good sour/American wild. I've found that something like RR Temptation totally hits the reset button.

Berliner Weisse might be a good option too

Might I suggest a bottle of Monks Cafe to reset that there palate of yours? This works for me just fine.

If everything you try starts to taste the same then your palate is indeed burned out. Repeating bitter beers in a session, even if they aren't true palate wreckers, can wreck the palate over time. Try a different style and then go back to the ipa/dipa. Try a different alcoholic beverage for a while and lay off beer until you feel like your interest has sufficiently re-accumulated. Expecting a full recovery from ruin ten might not be possible. They should print a warming on the label. "Just when you thought it was safe to drink this beer" . . .

Sounds like you've had what some call Lupulin Threshold Shift (LTS). It comes from drinking only heavily hopped beers and is quite normal. There is no one special beer that is the solution. Just take a break for a week or two from IPAs, etc. Then when you return to them vary what you drink a bit more so that you are not continually beating up your tastebuds with heavily hopped beers.

This happen very often in the world of cigars. As much as you probably don't want to hear it, take a little bit of time off from beer. I think Utopiajane said it best in that you might want to try another beverage. I went 6 months without a cigar once because, no matter what I tried, they all tasted the same. Of course that was when I was smoking close to 5 per day. I hope you can get back to drinking hoppy beers very soon. Let us know what worked for you.

Drink Coors Light for a week and you'll be right as rain.

Cruel and unusual punishment? Sure is.

Honestly, hit up some Heffs, Czech Pils and sessionable porters.

Please don't drink the Coors Light. Abstinence is the way. I do it every week from Mon. to Fri. evening and 90% of what I drink are IPAs in varying strengths and hoppiness. Yes, by Sunday my palate is screwed up but by the next Friday, I'm ok again and ready for massive amounts of hops.

I would throw Berliner's in there as well.

So did the guy who posted after me. Sours, gueuzes, American wilds etc. are far easier to find in my neck of the woods than Berliner weiss. I'd guess the ratio is probably 10 or 20 to 1. Not sure if the situation is different in other parts of the country.

Belgian Pale Ale always work for me. Pick up some Duvel or Pranqster.

my bad. Your post was the last on my page and I just clicked reply after reading. There isn't many around Chicago regularly either. But Pipeworks has put a few out and should be making some soon and New Glarus had their Berliner out a couple months ago.

I would say Gueuzes and Lambics are ideal for palate refreshing. I'd also recommend a nice, effervescent Saison.

Try drinking some ESB's, that'll set you straight

I have always wanted this to happen to me but alas it has never.

I would echo everyone else. A low ABV Berliner or Saison and some time away from hoppy beers (gasp) will do the trick.

Thanks for all of the advice. I'm definitely going to look into some Belgians and maybe a sour or two.
What about coffee beers (or stouts/porters)? Anyone use those?

I wouldn't think big roasty beers would achieve your goal, only because you're replacing one kind of bitter (hoppy) with another (roasty). But you're still giving your palate a serious workout when what it's trying to tell you is to just give it a break. My 2₵, your mileage may vary.
