New member. Researched the website but having trouble with the available info rating pale ales to answer a simple question.
What are some of the best available (excluding examples like Russian River and Three Floyds which I cannot get in Missouri) american pales that are similar in style and taste to english ales. That is smoother and less hoppy/harsh than american ales. I like all beers but have found that the american take on microbrews has been the more hops, the better. The bigger and bolder the flavor, the better. I suppose we are like that with our cabs too...

Looking for an ale that is more balanced. One of my personal favorites is Samuel Smith Old Brewery Pale Ale, which apparently is no longer distributed in the US or at lease in MO. It has been replaced with the less impressive Organic Pale Ale.

    Thanks for any opinions
    Ed

Odell's 5 Barrel Pale Ale should meet your guidelines....I would think.

If you liked the Samuel Smith Old Brewery Pale Ale, give Fullers London Pride a try.

Kona castaway has a nice balance as well as Firestone walker union jack.
Keep your eye on the dates.

OP is looking for balanced ales that aren't hop bombs. Some of the suggestions here don't really seem to fit that bill.

I'll second Odell 5 Barrel, since that's what I came here to recommend, and I'll add Firestone Walker Double Barrel Ale. Those are probably the best two I've had that are American-made. Obviously many English-made pales will fit the bill here.

Sorry--edited my post right after I posted it. But whether or not he eventually gets into pales like Sierra Nevada's, it's pretty clearly not what he's said he's looking for right now.

Boulevard Pale Ale is right in front of you, and is not an extremely hopped brew. Try it, I hope you like it.

Arcadia Anglers Ale or possibly even their IPA, it is not overly hoppy.

If you can find it, Mo by Maine Beer Company is amazing.

Schlafly Pale Ale, you'll have no trouble finding it in Missouri.

Can you get Smuttynose (Portsmouth, NH) in Missouri? Shoals Pale Ale is an excellent American interpretation of an English pale ale.

I found myself chuckling at the suggestions made. "I don't want something hoppy." "Have you tried this hoppy ale? I failed reading comprehension in school, but I like this beer!"

FW Double Barrel Ale is an excellent suggestion.

Honestly, the other APA examples I can think of are usually too highly hopped. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is worth a try, as it's nowhere near as abrasive as these newer APAs with tons of fruity dry-hopping, but it's still a relatively hoppy brew.

There are plenty of English examples, if the OP is not looking specifically for US craft options.

Finally, consider lagers. Boston Lager is pretty easy to find, has a nice balancing bitterness, and while it isn't an APA, it's a smooth, mild, flavorful beer. SN Vienna Lager fits that bill, too.

Dogtown Pale Ale has a beautiful frothy meringue-like head. I love it.

I don't know what you get in Missouri but other than Three Floyds and Russian River, these I love

    - Oskar Blues Pale Ale
    - Victory Headwaters Pale Ale
    - Sierra Nevada Pale Ale (what a classic)
    - Lugunitas Pale Ale
    - Evil Twin Hipster Ale (I think this is a perfect example of a modern day pale ale)
    - Unita Extra Pale Ale (Obviously this is going to be more hoped)
    - Half Acre Daisy Cutter (prob my 2nd favorite after FFF)
    - And if you can somehow get to Vermont, Hill Farmstead Edward Pale Ale
