Odell doesn't have a perfect record with QA/QC, but they've certainly been cordial in making things right.

Do commercial brewers really consider this?

I mean, I'm sure a brewer going from sea level to CO may think about it, but does a brewer at Cigar City see a hurricane coming (knowing there will be lower pressure) and adjust his boil accordingly?

Not to derail this thread (any more) but I also had an issue with another beer they made, the India Barleywine. They delivered two replacement bottles to my door. Can't beat that. Mistakes can happen, so it's all about how you handle them.

Hey guys, I had a conversation with an Avery employee who had some pretty good knowledge on the barrel program. He told me that many years ago Avery released a BA porter that tested clean initially, but later they discovered that it had become infected. They worked to fix this problem by implementing new guidelines with their barrel aged beers. First off, they do extensive testing on every batch. They sample the beers and they only release them when they feel the beer is ready. He said it's possible for brett to reduce diacetyl, but they make sure it's exactly how they want the beer to taste before it is released. At that point the beer is flash pasturized, then bottled. Since then they have had a great track record of consistent quality.

In addition he told me that Black Eye was a nod to the "black eye" that Avery got over the infected beers.

Was he talking about Black Tot or a smaller batch item?
Odell's issue with their early BA Stout were similar. Some (maybe all?) were good right away, but others too a crazy turn and ended up tasting like a Jolly Pumpkin beer. They ended up recalling it, but the bottles pop up here and there. Amazingly enough, some are good and others are not. Same batch, too. Ditto with GD's Barrel Aged Yeti. Same batch, some are good and others are not. I used to think it was a myth, but then I had 3 sour ones in a row.

I sent a Café Vaillant to my friend who didn't much like it, I think it ended up a drain pour. They have a newer version of a similar brew out now, Café Verdad. Anyway, buyer beware. The $13 I spend on CV could have been spent on a larger bottle of BBB or a larger can of BA TenFidy. :slight_frown:
