After mowing the lawn, I am currently thoroughly enjoying my Goose Island Sofie, 20% of which was aged in wine barrels with orange peel. 20% seems just about right to me right now. A perfectly incorporated dimension added without becoming the only dimension detectable.

I do love a good funky wine barrel aged beer sometimes and bourbon bomb barrel aged stouts and barleywines are a weakness of mine. But subtlety is nice sometimes too. Sierra Nevada's Grand Cru had some barrel aged Bigfoot in the mix and I loved that one. I can't think of any more at the moment, but I'm sure I've had other partially barrel aged beers. I do wish they were more common though.

How do you feel about them and please name some other examples.

Deschutes The Abyss is also only partially aged (I think like 25%). I'm not a big fan but most people on the site seem to really like it.

Edit: Quick google search and I found this: 6% in oak bourbon barrels, 11% in oak barrels and 11% in oak wine barrels.

I think Abyss is overpriced for only being 25% barrel aged, it's still good though.

With that said, how is this done. Do you brew a batch, throw it in barrel and then brew another batch a year later and blend them together ?

Also, I see a lot barrel-aged beers that are aged for 3 months. What's the point ? Might as well go at least 6 months.

Yeah I wasn't a big fan either. I never knew there were wine barrels involved, thanks for the info.
