I am visiting my folks in Jacksonville and will be returning home to Maryland on Saturday the 20th of Oct. I was in Charleston early in the summer and picked up quite a few good beers. I was wondering if any locals could tell me if there was anything worth detouring through there to pick up on my way home. Is Boy King available and still "fresh" enough to bother with? Also, any other limited releases from local breweries or bottles available at CBX or HoB? Thanks in advance and cheers!

Boy King is not fresh nor readably availably. There is the chance that if you went by the brewery that COAST would be putting out Blackbeerd BA.

COAST has Dead Arm Pale out and since Holy City won a Gold Medal at GABF, they are having some cool stuff going on at the brewery (maybe a Collision Stout BA release since they got a bomber bottling line a few months ago; this is all speculation).

It's always worth the trip to CBX to see what they have on their growler station and what they may have that you can't get back home.

In short, I don't know. I'm hoping someone else will chime in.

If you are looking for some interesting bottles of local beer, stop by or call Westbrook too see what they have.

Westbrook has Apple Brandy Barrel Tripel and Wine Barrel Aged Lichtenhainer in bottles, and they may still have Apple Brandi Barrel 2011 Citrus Ninja on tap. As for Coast, how can someone say Boyking is not fresh? It was released a month ago. Besides, this batch was a tad hot and could use a month or two to condition. You may find some Boyking around town in bottles, but you will have to look at the less picked over spots.

Not wishing to sound negative, but if you're traveling on I-95, there probably isn't enough good beer to detour that far. Yeah, Westbrook and Coast have a few beers on the shelves right now, but if it was me, I wouldn't veer that far for a couple of beers. If you're talking about going to the breweries, that's even a longer drive to North Charleston or Mt. P.

However, if you're considering staying over a day or two to enjoy the scenery, take in a good restaurant and then look for beers, that's a different story.

I won't be unable to stay over sadly. I really enjoyed charleston when I visited this summer. I was only going to deviate if Blackbeerd or some other really tasty small release was up on draft/bottle. After hittin Intuition in Jacksonville I probably won't stray Into charleston unless Black drops or someone points out some really good bottles that are available. Regardless thanks for the info everyone.

I filled 2 growlers with Coasts "Bisquits and Honey" and "Pecan Dream" yesterday at the Otranto Piggly Wiggly in North Charleston. They are pretty close to one of the I-26 exits coming into town. Bill's liquer store in Summerville is close to the Summerville exit, but I am unfamilar with what they have at the moment.

If you're willing to deviate that far, I'd suggest veering off I-95 into Raleigh instead of Charleston (roughly the same distance), simply because there are a lot more tasty local beers available in Raleigh. You could easily pick up some Roth, Aviator, Flagship, Big Boss, Natty Greene, Foothills, French Broad, Mother Earth and a few others I'm probably not remembering. NC beers tend to be small productions which make them pretty hard to find elsewhere, which is another plus to head there.

Not dissing the work of the excellent breweries in Charleston; there's just more available in NC.

I only meant that any place that I have been has no Boy King. The very few places the were allocated sold out quick (even a month ago). CFB went through their kegs by the end of Sept. You may be able to catch it on draft somewhere, but the bottles are dried up. I did not mean that it was undrinkable, just quite rare to find within CHS. If I am wrong, please point me to the place where I can grab a pint (or bomber).

Brixx had Event Horizon a month after the brewery sold out. There are always a few places not on the normal list of beer geek spots that seem to hold on to beers. If Laura Alberts got any, they probably still have it. Hard to get doesn't mean it won't be fresh.

I really liked the Westbrook Apple Brandy Tripel on draft. I Hope to grab a bottle in the few free seconds I have this week.
