"Sort of great" is like a little bit pregnant, or "it was really good for being just OK".

I keep thinking back to the future for evolving beverage tastes and choices. I'm pretty sure there are just so many buttons to push as to flavor and style, that is until rewind. What the hell do I know?

Making ever more esoteric stuff for a diminishing audience strikes me as a seize the moment cash in and move on approach or a more frenzied we gotta pay the rent act. If you have to keep changing to stay in business then there isn't a core and at some point the train runs out of coal.

The only brewery I've tried that makes shakes as good as Tired Hands is Aslin. That being said, they're overall overrated imo.

Seems like too many breweries are trying simply trying to make an IPA that is as sweet and fruity as possible instead of having lactose and vanilla complement the base ipa (and this is coming from someone that loves pastry stouts). If the added ingredients add fun flavors while still being a great beer, it's very delicious and worth it (TH strawberry shake was the ideal version of this for me).

FWIW the Strawberry version of Tired Hands Milkshakes was my favorite.

    Cheers!

Not my style, I've had a few, but I wouldn't feel the need to seek out another unless it was from a top end brewery like Tired Hands. I just want a bit more bitter out of my IPAs, and I'm in at that they're a one and done for me too. It's just too much to add lactose and fruit to a beer and it's still an IPA, it needs another name because it's a 180 from the typical IPA.

Every example of milkshake IPA I've seen includes vanilla (and usually fruit) in addition to lactose, since many brewers make IPAs with lactose that are not considered milkshakes.

Well, you have a winky face there so maybe....

Just in case: Have you ever spent any time in Greenwich? If so, then you know that place is full of New Yorkers!!

    Cheers!

I have had a bunch of the Weldwerks Milkshake IPAs and I really like them. The Pina Colada is the best one they make IMO. I'm not even really sure they should be considered IPAs at this point, but as my friends say, does it really matter?

I've only had a few proper milkshakes, being Hoof Hearted's [long name with Clipboard], Great Notion's mochi passionfruit shake, Tired Hands' Strawberry, and Sixpoint's Dreamsicle (sour blood orange milkshake), and the Sixpoint one was the only one I really really liked. Clipboard and the Great Notion were just way too sweet, and the passionfruit burn was overwhelming. The TH Strawberry shake was okay, but pretty muted. May not have been the freshest.

My old adage when it comes to beer is I'll try anything once. That said I've had a few of these milkshake IPA's. My honest opinion on them is this: some are good, many are terrible, and so far none have been great.

And North Carolina is full of folks from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, and Connecticut. They all seem to assimilate just fine.

I will give them credit on describing this beer, they are spot on. I am not a big MilkShake IPA person, had a few and found them tough to look at and almost cloyingly sweet. Cloud Catcher is very subdued on the vanilla and if lactose was added, it was with a deft hand. I picked up a 6 pack of this for my daughter and ended up drinking most of it

This is definitely a style where few are good and many are awful. I’ve liked what I’ve had from Great Notion, Weldwerks, Bellwoods. The Pina Colada one from Weldwerks was particularly good. The recent Tangerine Milkshark from Bellwoods was fantastic. Any of the style I have had from breweries not known for the style have been almost undrinkable.

The style can produce some truly ugly beers too. I had one not long ago that looked like somebody had the runs and decided it would be funny to can and sell it! It was not funny at all.

Maybe if we just stop talking about this so-called style, it will go away more quickly than it surely already will. I could go on about so-called pastry stouts, but I'd just piss people off. People need to drink what they like until they get either sick or tired of them. Or love them into their individual eternity!
