A friend will be at Paw Paw Lake this coming week and has offered to bring back some MI only beers. He won't have a chance to travel too far. The closest thing I can find for him is the Sip N Time place in Watervliet. Is that place any good for Short's beer and the like? Any other recommendations for places for him to go?
It's not too far away to go to the bottle shops on the west side of Kalamazoo -- Mega Bev on West Main Street and Drake Party Store on Drake Road at the corner of West Michigan Ave. Both have very large selections. Short's stuff is fairly easy to find in most large supermarkets, but those places are not likely to have the special/seasonal releases. These special releases are usually small batches and they fly off the shelves, so the selection of them will be limited almost anywhere.
Thanks for the tips. However, they are at Lake Paw Paw, not the town of Paw Paw, which looks to be 30 minutes away. The nearest burgs appear to be Coloma, Watervliet and Benton Harbor.
If he is coming from WI and circling the lake to get there, right off 94 on the way there is Bud and Elsie's (I think in Benton Harbor?). They usually have a good Short's selection there as well as others.
My mistake. I thought Paw Paw Lake was probably that little lake in Paw Paw. In that case, if the local stores mentioned above are not to your liking, then The Liquor Locker or the Liquor Cabinet in St. Joseph are probably the closest stores with a known good reputation for a good selection. The Bud & Elsie's that was mentioned above is in New Buffalo, and they usually have some Short's stuff. Same for the grocery store attached to the rear of the New Buffalo Pharmacy right in the center of town. (Can't think of that grocery store's name.) Both places will have about the same selection, and they are three blocks apart.
There's also Lambrecht's near Liquor Cabinet in St. Joe and Gill's on Red Arrow Highway in Stevensville.
If he is interested in growlers or just good micros he should hit up Greenbush BC in Sawyer, RoundBarn in Baroda, and Livery in Benton Harbor. Greenbush is just off 94 and WELL worth the stop.
Thanks for all of the suggestions. He is planning a stop at Greenbush and probably The Livery. Do they only sell beer to go in growlers at The Livery or do they sell bottles to go?
I've only been to the Liquor Locker one time and it was a decent selection. I have not been to the Liquor Cabinet to compare the two. I mentioned these two in my earlier post because they are both regularly mentioned in these threads, so someone likes them. Here is a link to a Google map with a review for both. https://maps.google.com/maps?ie=UTF...h,+MI&ei=6EbSUaHWBZDGywGikoCgAg&ved=0CKUBELYD
If he's driving back from Paw Paw Lake to Wisconsin by going around the lake to the south, he can just hit Barney's or the drug store next door in New Buffalo. I think you take the Pulaski exit (it's like exit 2 or something, right before crossing into Indiana), go east, make a left at the light and you can't miss it about a mile or two down the road. They almost always have the normal Short's stuff (Pale, Huma, etc.) and maybe occasionally some specialty stuff. My friend picked up a bunch of singles of Dan's Pink Skirt a few weeks ago.
