PBS has been airing the show “Brewed in New York.” Each episode highlights a few breweries, in specific locations of NY, without the flash and forced enthusiasm common in other food/beverage shows. They started in NYC and Long Island, then followed the Hudson River north. Aside from their spartan web page I found little more about the show.

More substance would be appreciated, the content has been far less the the 30min. time slot, and they have missed some brewers I feel deserve attention. The show feels like a soft advertisement, yet it has been enjoyable and a refreshingly respeful survey of New York’s breweries.

Great idea for a show, I now am motivated to watch.

Most don't know it, since the main numbers folks quote for number of breweries in a state is"breweries per person" but for total number of breweries, IIRC, NY is number one. No secret to those of us who have been touting our local scene for many years. Glad to see the word is getting out, would be nice to see more folks from nearby states come here for our great beer, instead of traveling to other more distant states. NY beer is as good or better than any beer in this country in most styles one can name. Glad to see us celebrated in PBS show I look forward to watching.

Not according to the Brewers Association (which only counts "craft" breweries, unfortunately, but that would only add a few more - Genesee, AB in Baldwinsville, Olde Saratoga - to NY's total).

NEW YORK - 329 Craft Breweries (Ranks 5th)
    vs
    CALIFORNIA - 764 Craft Breweries (Ranks 1st)
    WASHINGTON - 369 Craft Breweries (Ranks 2nd)
    COLORADO - 348 Craft Breweries (Ranks 3rd)
    MICHIGAN - 330 Craft Breweries (Ranks 4th)

but 2-5 are all in the same 300-400 range, so one could see them all switching rankings in the future. Any of them doubling the number of breweries to pass CA seems unlikely.

New York was #1 in the period 1876-Prohibition.

Thanks for that! Thought I read we were no. 1 on a TAP NY blurb, which I couldn't find, then I looked it up, and gave up when all I got were articles about "per capita" .

I looked to see if I could watch these shows online but I was unsuccessful; maybe my web searching skills are inadequate here?

    Cheers!

@RSB is waiting for it to be scheduled to be shown on an NYC-area PBS station (not filmed in NYC breweries), and the show's WATCH page says:

Yeah, I was unable to find on line episodes too. Hopefully they will re-run if enough folks show interest. I missed the episode about the breweries closest to me.

    Prost!

“WNET & WLIW: Premiering in October- check back specific times.” Or friends might DVRit for me.

Just to keep your vast beer knowledge database up to date, Olde Saratoga closed.

Are these numbers we're talking about, counts of brewing companies, or physical breweries or brewing locations?

Would Druthers Brewing Co., for instance, which has three restaurant/brewpubs, count as 3, or just 1 ?

It's the Brewers Association's figure - you can check their list of New York State breweries (craft and non-craft - what they call "Large") with the pull down menu at their Brewery Directory page.

Note that there's a "filter" option and the entire list also includes both "Contract" and "Planning" breweries.

    Thanks.
    I checked it out.

Druthers is listed only once (the Saratoga location), although beer is brewed at all three locations. The Saratoga location opened first, and perhaps is considered the Company's headquarters.

On the other hand, the two Gordon Biersch restaurants in NYS are listed separately.

Genesee Brewhouse (brewpub) is listed separately from North American Brewing (the Genesee production brewery).

I loathe inconsistency. But it could be they going by some business-related thing .. licences, certificate of incorporation, I dunno...

Could also be dependent on how the brewing company pays it dues to the B.A. Is each facility a "Member" or "Associate Member" (as is the case with all of the AB facilities [Baldwinsville] and their ex-craft breweries [Blue Point]) or is just the parent company.

Yes I bet you are correct.

In the Albany area, the program premiers on WMHT Ch. 17 on Sept. 9th.
