    Hi all.

Thanks for entertaining what is probably a ridiculous question. Do any of you PDX folks have recommendations on where I can take a laptop to get work done while drinking a beer. I am usually a coffee shop and get work done kind of guy, but as it warms up, I would much prefer to get out and drink a beer instead.

So my question is two fold. Is it appropriate to go to a bar/brewery/bottleshop and take a laptop or book? And if so, what places around town do you see this happening. I am sure that any brave enough soul can walk into any bar with a laptop and start doing work, but I am looking for a place where this is almost accepted/encouraged or the norm.

    Thoughts?

Any of them... Especially not during business hours.
Imperial bottle shop has that coffee house feel to it...
As does tin bucket, belmont, etc.

I think this only gets weird if the bar is crowded (eg Bailey's on a Friday night or any other situation where there are more people than seats). I've gotten work done at HotD, Bailey's, Mongers, Concordia, Breakside, and others. Granted, I tend to be on an early schedule and tend to drink earlier so I can sober up before bed (helps me sleep). Thus, I always avoid the crowds.

I have gotten work done at Cascade Barrelhouse a number of times, both inside and outside. It tends to be pretty quiet in the afternoon.

Thanks for the suggestions. Ive gone up to Occidental and gotten work done there because they have free WIFI. Any of these places have free WIFI?

I have had a lot of meetings at Baileys.

Cascade works too and has wifi.

Hotd and mongers is where I go. Cascade sometimes as well.

I'm hard pressed to name a bar / brewpub that _doesn't_ have free wifi other than Deschutes.

Good to know. I didn't realize that doing work at a bar/brewery was a thing. But I guess what do the bars care if its not busy. It just means you are going to be there for an extended amount of time which means you are going to spend more.

Belmont Station as well I think, but yeah, there aren't very many (that I know of) in town.

I confess I was a bit surprised by the OP, as I was always under the impression that this is pretty common in PDX. So common in fact, that usually having wifi and doing work aren't even a consideration for me... I'm usually more concerned about the noise level, ability to find an open spot where I can spread out and, most importantly of all, whether the beer selection will be worthy enough for me to go spend a lot of time there.

I must be just way out of the loop. So what I am hearing is people go to breweries/bars and spread out and get work done all the time - and I am overly self-conscious for asking the question. Im warning you now that if you go somewhere and you see 5 PC towers hooked up having a LAN party and look at me funny, ill just say that you said it was ok.

    LOL!!!

5 towers and your own LAN? Yep, shouldn't be any problem whatsoever with that, and you can absolutely tell the bar I said it was fine (and normal). I'm sure that will end any further questions or concerns right there on the spot. :-)

Belmont Station recently added a public wi-fi channel.

I would love to see a quadric surface plot of time versus alcohol consumption versus productivity. There's gotta be a few sweet spots on there.

I think my sweet spot would be 1.5 beers over about an hour. Im sailing then.

I love that article! Makes me feel better while working buzzed. Though the driving thing needs to be worked out ... Maybe when self driving cars are more mainstream we'll be good.

And my work here is done.

If only PDX had good public transit...
