Going to try doing a Peanut Butter Brown Ale soon...recipe below: 1 Gallon Batch SRM - 22 OG - 1.060 ABV - 5.7% IBU - 20 2 lbs Maris Otter - 80% .3 lbs Victory - 12% .12 lbs Caramel Crystal 60L - 5% .08 lbs Chocolate Malt - 3% .2 oz Fuggle @ 60 min 4 oz PB2 (powdered peanut butter, oil removed) @ 5 min Yeast is WLP001 (have some leftover, and I figure it's versatile enough) May end up adding more PB2 in a secondary after tasting, but don't wanna add more to the boil and accidentally overdo it Thoughts?
I currently just kegged a porter that I used pb2 in secondary. I used 2lbs of pb2 in a 6 gallon batch and the flavor is very subtle and not as strong as I would like. Not sure if adding it to the boil will make the flavor better as I have not tried that yet, but let me know what you think after you try it. You can definitely smell it in the beer, but the flavor is not as strong as the aroma.
I found a guy on reddit who does it in the boil and seems to think it works well but I guess the only way to find out is to try it! Considering you used 32 oz in a 6 gallon batch, maybe I should bump it up to 5-6 oz in the boil? I also wonder if your choice of porter made a difference as it seems usually peanut butter flavor doesn't really come through in a darker heavier beer like that
Yeah I'm sure my style of beer also effected the pb2 profile quite a bit. Id say you can do your 4oz addition in boil and if you aren't happy with it you can add some to secondary
I usually use 2lbs in a 5-6 gallon batch so you may want to bump it up a bit though being a Brown ale instead of Porter you'd be fine with less anyway. Adding to boil will give you more flavor than secondary so stick with that plan. Rest of the recipe looks solid so get brewing!
Don’t know if this helps. Here in Cali, Belching Beaver from San Diego, Peanut Butter Milk Stout is their flagship. Give it a look into.
That sounds awesome. Unfortunately I'm in NY so probably will never get a chance to try. But may keep it in mind if this brew goes well. I love milk stouts
