I am going to be headed up to Vermont in the next two weeks and it looks like there is a path that takes me pretty close to these two breweries. For the locals which one would you recommend stopping at for a couple of pints before getting back on the road?

    Thanks

This seems to be a rather unpopular opinion around these parts, but I've been to Peekskill two or three times and have yet to be all that impressed by their beers. They're all solid, but I personally haven't been wowed by anything. They do have food though. Good but highly overpriced food. So if that's you're thing - head to Peekskill. And don't get me wrong. I actually like the place. Staff has been outstanding. The place itself is cool. I just think the beers aren't as great as people say they are and the food is way expensive.

I've only been to Cpt Lawrence once, and it was for an IP trade. Only had one beer with the girlfriend and bounced, but I was very impressed with the taproom - more than I expected. I think they occasionally have food trucks too.

But I dk. It's ultimately up to you. I'd probably do Peekskill if I wanted to make one stop. Why not do one on the way up and one on the way back? Haha.

I dk where your path takes you, but might I suggest considering New England Brewing Company? I'd at least look into it to see how far away it might be. I'm in Northwest NJ and it's never been too far out of the way to stop there on my way back from VT. And they make some killer beers.

    Either way, enjoy yourself.

Peekskill no contest but you really could do both. Captain Lawrence can be done in 15-20 minutes. That being said how the hell late are you leaving for VT? CL doesn't open til 4pm on the weekdays and noon on Sat and Sun.

Thanks for all of the information. Sounds like Peekskill is the favorite thus far at least from those who've posted.

mikeburd: thanks for the information. NEBCO isn't all that far out of my path but isn't open on Sunday, which is when I am headed up there. Perhaps on my way back down I will hit them up. Hopefully their taplist remains the same as it is currently.

Benz: I will be leaving the Harrisburg area late morning or early afternoon on a Sunday so it looks like Captain Lawrence isn't an option on the way up as I see they are only open until 5 on Sundays.

Peekskill all day. Haven't had a beer I didn't like from them. And the food is awesome as well. Eastern standard, higher standard, and amazeballs are ridiculous.

Both places are really fun and have a lot to offer but peekskill is the one I'd recommend....maybe over any other NY Brewery?

Not to be that guy but Vermont is still a long way from there. Please be careful on the road after a couple of pints. I won't go into details but a handful of folks I know have come out on the bad side of driving and having a few lately so I'm kind of extra paranoid about this now. Peekskill has a great growler filling machine, take it with you and enjoy when you reach your destination safely.

Peekskill all day - great food and great beer !!! You cannot go wrong and the spot right on the Hudson River is spectacular too.

Although I do enjoy their beers I'm not really a fan of the Captain Lawrence tasting room. some of the guys that work the bar are pretty um... standoffish. I second the Peekskill+Birdsall reccomendation, really can't go wrong hitting up both of those spots in one day. I do it often
