The more I think about this, I'm thinking I would take my answer and divide by about 5, or whatever the standard utilization ratio of wet to dry hops is. Let's say it's 5. The reason is that a pound of dry hops is "X" number of cones. So a pound of wet hops would be about X/5 cones. And it's the number of cones that should determine the trapping power.

OTOH, dried cones tend to fall apart, so a wet cone should probably trap more wort. Maybe divide by 2.5 instead of 5 and see what that does.

Note: there are two conversations going on in this thread. My posts relate to wort absorption (absorption/trapping), @CurtFromHershey's question. I think @Reneejane is addressing the OP.

OP: Brew your beer normally...have your buddy wait 2 weeks before picking the hops...use to wet hop (verb, similar to dryhop)

Stuff as many cones as you can get into a large, fine nylon bag...and place in purged keg...rinse and repeat next year at this time

    No calculations necessary : )

Wet haps are 80% water and 20 plant material
Dry hops are 10% water and 90% plant material.

So 90/20 = 4.5. Round up to 5. Live large and use 6 times if you feel like it.

To hell with trying to make a side-by-side. Make the best beer you can with your pellet hops. Make the best beer you can with your whole hops. Just expect to make 7 gallons of whole hop beer and 6 of pellet hop beer. Otherwise, you'll end up with a half batch.
