I will be traveling in the near future. Is there any beer only available in Pennsylvania that I should look at?
The seekabrew isn't really all at helpful, since it only lists brewery names, is a bit out of date, and seems to leave off some local breweries. If I were you I'd also check BA list of PA breweries or go on beermenus and check liquor stores in the area where you'll be and see what they have specifically.
Hard to say since PA is a big state and so not all PA beers are available everywhere in the State. Same with some that get to neighboring states, some beers, say in the Pittsburgh area that get into Ohio don't get to Philly or are hard to find there.
Some of the highlights, Troegs (Throughout the State), Tired Hands (Philly Area), Yards (Throughout the State), Victory (Throughout), Voo Doo (Throughout). Hope this helps
@rst428, if you provide us with more specifics on where you will be within the state of PA we can be of greater help to you. Also, are you looking to purchase packaged beer to take home or are you more interested in drinking on premise (i.e., draft) beer? Cheers!
Also, what state are you coming from? We also get distribution of some breweries that are unique to the Philadelphia area compared to the rest of the Mid-Atlantic region.
I think Troegs is a must, but then again I may be biased. Apparently their Nimble Giant is amazing - coming from everyone I've talked to and even one person who isn't a double IPA fan.
If you are Harrisburg bound, Al's of Hampden and Selinsgrove. If you are Philly bound only, Monks Cafe just so you can say you were there. If Philly suburbs, Forest and Main in Ambler. If you are Langhorne or closer to NJ border, Vault Brewing for great pizza and decent beer.
Thank you everyone. I apologize I should have stated that I will be in Hershey are so I will be close to visit the places in Harrisburg mentioned. Also looking to take some home.
Troegs is in Hershey, so that is a no brainer. For beer to take home, Al's/Pizza Boy fills crowlers, and they have recently begun canning. Between their own beers and multiple other beers on tap you sholdn't have a problem finding something to take home with you.
Troegs started doing crowlers as well recently, along with bottles of their scratch and splinter beers
Troegs is a must as I stated earlier. There are some other small breweries you can hit up going towards Lancaster too.
When visiting Hershey there are two things about Troeg's that are helpful to know. The first is that they have the brewery set up so folks can take a self-guided tour, taking as much time as they want to read the signs and watch what is happening in different areas. The second is that while some of the Troeg's beers are distributed to several other states, they have something called the Scratch Series (mentioned earlier) which are basically their small baches and which are only available at the Brewery. In their gift shop you can often find 4-6 different Scratch beers available so that if you wanted to you could get something like a case of 4 different six packs to take home with you. BTW, In the tasting room and snack bar they typically have 20 or more of their beers on tap.
I highly recommend a visit to Al's and I'd suggest the following, currently available, brews: Amore Shark Murren River (Growler/crowler fills allowed) Sunny Side Up (Both the base (Growler/crowler fills allowed) and the barrel aged version (no fills) are tremendous) Thai PA (Growler/crowler fills allowed)
Was at Al's of Hampden yesterday, definitely worth checking out. Murren River and BBA Sunny Side Up were outstanding. They had some cans of Neshaminy Creek there as well, no date stamped on the bottom so no clue on freshness. They also had bottles of their Intangible Ales Planet of Dreamers available.
